FSCC women 7-0; men roll past Ottawa

Fort Scott Community College's women had to hold off Penn Valley, Mo., in order to win their game on the first day of the Gladbach Classic at Arnold Arena Friday night to prevail 70-63 and remain undefeated on the season.
Fort Scott's men won their second straight game as they rolled by the Ottawa University junior varsity in the nightcap, 93-63.
Connors State, Okla. began the day with a 94-60 rout of Cottey College in the first women's game to remain undefeated on the season as well, going to 6-0 behind 28 points form Eva Lewis and 22 by Megan Hartness. The two combined to make 19 of 31 shots form the field.
Link Year Prep's men outscored Penn Valley in the second half on their way to a 96-94 victory. Rylan Bergersen led Link Year with 20 points, making 5 of 7 field-goal attempts. James Byrd led the Scouts with 27 points.
Today, Connors State's women take on Penn Valley at noon followed by Penn Valley's men taking on the Ottawa JV at 2. Fort Scott's women will play Cottey at 4 and Greyhound men will face Link Year Prep at 6.
Women: Fort Scott 70, Penn Valley 63.
The Scouts (1-3) went on a 11-2 run as the first quarter came to an end and held a 26-21 lead after making 9 of 10 shots from the field.
Mia Cushon scored with 7:33 to go in the second to boost Penn Valley's lead to 28-23. But the Scouts didn't score again the rest of the half and were 1 of 14 in the quarter with 11 turnovers.
Jordyn Danzer hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 5:38 to go to five Fort Scott the lead, 29-28. Lillie Holtgrave followed with a 3-pointer of her own as the Greyhounds outscored the Scouts 12-0 the rest of the half.
Chasity Moore scored back-to-back baskets and Sarah Kelley added another early in the third to extend the lead to 41-30 with 6:47 on the clock.
Penn Valley went on a 7-0 run later in the quarter to get within 44-41. But Rachel Newquist scored back-to-back hoops to extend the Greyhound lead back to 7 points.
The score was 50-45 going into the final stanza. Penn Valley enjoyed a 8-1 run to get within 2 points, 55-53, with 4:49 to go.
Although the Scouts kept chipping into the lead, the never took it. Danzer's 3-pointer off the right wing with 2:57 to go made it 62-55. Batch scored on a baseline drive with 1:16 left to make it 66-60.
Danzer, Moore and Natalia Ready each scored 11 points for Fort Scott while Holtgrave finished with 10. Cushon led Penn Valley with 19 points.
Men: Fort Scott 92, Ottawa JV 62.
Jacob Murray gave the Braves a 13-12 lead with 13:53 left in the first half. But Brolon Moton sparked a 10-0- run by sticking back a teammate's miss and the 'Hounds (3-3) never looked back.
Moten capped an 8-0 run later in the half to extend the margin to 41-23. And Fort Scott also had a 12-0 run to end the half up 54-29.
Dejuan Sherman came off the bench to lead Fort Scott with 14 points. Tyler Zinn added 12, Dametrius Walker 11 and Josh Walls 10.
Wednesday men: Fort Scott 79, Washburn JV 63.
Four Greyhounds reached double figures Wednesday night as Fort Scott Community College's men defeated the Washburn University junior varsity, 79-63, at Arnold Arena.
Dametrius Walker led the way with 20 points for the Greyhounds followed by Tyler Zinn with 13 and Brolon Moton and Dejuna Sherman each with 12. Darren Spuill led Washburn (2-4) with 17 points. Eric Hamrs added 11 for the Ichabods.
