Tennis season closes
CHANUTE -- Tennis season came to a close for Fort Scott High School here Saturday at the Chanute Class 4A Regional Tennis Tournament.
The Tigers were in a 10-team field that included Independence, Parsons and Winfield. All four of their entries were eliminated after one match.
"We knew this was going to be a very tough tournament going in," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "We have several strong teams in our league and then when you add a team like Winfield it makes the tournament even tougher."
Briana Williams (11-8) and came the closest to advancing, falling to Kelsey Smith of Parsons, 2-6, 6-4 (10-7).
"(Williams) has done a great job this year coming back from missing last season following knee surgery," Barr said.
Rebekah Sweyko (1-1) lost to Makayla Dashner of El Dorado, 9-5, in singles play. Emily Adams and Mikayla Norris (7-9) fell to Xzavea Wommack/Jaryn Folk of Parsons, 6-3, 6-1, and Addison Cunningham and Madi Larson (10-9) were swept by Addison Julian/Alex Keller of Independence, 6-0, 6-0.
"We were not able to advance anyone to the state tournament this year, but we were proud of the way our many of our kids competed and the effort they gave," Barr said.
