One-run games the way of the day
With the exception of the final game of the day between Colby and Fort Scott, one-run decisions were the rule of the first day of play in the Kansas American Legion AA State Tournament at Dave Regan Stadium Wednesday.
Goodland began the day with a 3-2 win over Iola powered by a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Then Larned scored all of its runs in the top of the seventh and held off Marysville in game two, 4-3. In the third game, Doniphan County held off Russell with a defensive stand in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 victory.
Goodland 3, Iola 2.
Evan Peter's 2-out single to left in the bottom of the seventh of the tournament opener scored Brandt Mull with the tying run and Andy Windell with the game winner as the Goodland Post 117 Outlaws came from behind for the victory.
Mull pinch hit to lead off the inning and reached on an error. Windell bunted with one out and was safe when Iola's catcher threw the ball into the Goodland bullpen.
Iola pitcher Dylan Splane got a pop up for the second out ahead of Peter's winning hit. Splane pitched well enough to win, allowing only one earned run on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9.
Iola's Keanen Badders was the only player in the game with more than one hit, finishing 2 for 4. He scored the game's first run in the top of the first on Ethan Sigg's 2-out single in the top of the third.
Darby Seeger was the winning pitcher for the Outlaws, going all 7 innings and allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks with 5 K's.
Every run in the game scored with 2 out.
Larned 4, Marysville 3.
Larned didn't score at all in this game until the top of the seventh inning. Tyler Stetler led off the inning with a single, then moved to second on a passed ball. Alex Barger then drew the first of four walks for the Indians in the inning. Mason Schartz singled with one out to bring Stetler home.
Evan Skelton drew a walk. Gage Skelton's sacrifice fly brought Barger home. Then Landen Erwaly walked on a 3-2 pitch and Isiah Perez drew four straight balls to force in Schartz with the tying run. Evan Skelton scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Jacob Latta was 2 for 3 for Marysville and drove in all 3 runs. He scored Tommy Brinegar with a third-inning single and Caleb Maynard and Brinegar with a fifth-inning triple. Brinegar was 2 for 4 at the plate for Post 163.
Gage Skelton was the winning pitcher in relief for Larned, which won its sixth consecutive game, allowing just one walk over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Doniphan County 3, Russell 2.
The third one-run game of the day wasn't determined by a seventh-inning rally but rather a defensive stand. Russell had 2 hits and drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases with 2 outs but Nathan Gaarder got Brandon Ridgley looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
Gaarder allowed 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 8 as he went the distance for Doniphan County.
D.C. scored first when Wyatt Huss' 2-out line drive hit pitcher Ridgley in the ankle in the top of the second, allowing Wil Smith to score. The Post 99 Broncos responded with 2 in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Logan Brown's sacrifice fly plated Colton Fritschen, who was hit by a pitch leading off the inning. Ridgley followed with a 2-out double that scored Chase Prester.
Russell had a chance to end the fifth by turning a double play but the second baseman dropped the ball and all hands were safe. Smith later drove in Reid Greaser, who was safe on that error, with the tying run.
Brody Winder reached on an error leading off the sixth and went on to score what held up as the winning run on a single by Hunter Idol.
Greaser, Smith and Huss each had 2 hits for Doniphan County off Ridgley, who allowed one earned run on 7 hits and one walk while striking out 5. Prester was 3 for 3 for Russell.
