Alta Louise Carper, age 100, died Sunday, May 1, 2016, at Moran Manor, Moran, Kan. She was born June 3, 1915, in Bourbon County, Kan., (Pawnee Station) the daughter of William and Bessie Long Dikeman. She married Louis F. "Red" Carper on Jan. 3, 1941. They lived most of their married life in Fort Scott, Kan., except for a few years in Pittsburg, Kan. Mr. Carper preceded Alta in death on Jan. 7, 1978. Alta's hands were always busy working on some handiwork, including sewing for herself and others, crocheting, knitting and most of all she was an avid quilter. She went to the V.F.W. every Monday morning for 35 years where she and other auxiliary members quilted. She loved to work word puzzles, read, fish, and play cards in her earlier years. She also enjoyed flower gardening. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, the United Methodist Church, and a past member of several friendship clubs. She worked at Medical Lodge for several years as well as assisting Mrs. Holy in catering to BPW meetings at the Old Fort and other events.
Survivors include one sister, Jessie Streeter and husband Jim, Fort Scott; one brother, Frank Dikeman, Moran, Kan.; two nieces, Shirley Hartman (who Alta help raise) and husband Dale, Moran, and Susan Kern and husband Steve, Loa, Utah; one nephew, David Streeter and wife Debra, Carl Junction, Mo.; and several great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews who were all very special to Alta. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, JoAnn Gilbert and Ruth Dikeman; and one brother, Raymond Dikeman. She outlived all her maternal and paternal aunts and uncles.
Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct funeral services at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until service time at the Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the donor's charity of choice and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O.
