Tuesday, March 22, 2016

The Fort Scott Community College baseball team took three out of four games in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play versus Independence Thursday and Saturday.

The teams split on Thursday at Independence with the Greyhounds taking game one 2-1 and the Pirates capturing the second, 10-9.

Fort Scott swept home games played at Lions Field on Saturday, 8-2 and 14-12.

Both of the Greyhounds' runs in Thursday's opener scored in the top of the fourth. Jedd Andrade hit a one-out solo homer. Later in the inning, Harrison Whitworth's double scored Nick Banman with the second run.

Ryan McCullough (3-1) allowed an earned run on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly on 6 hits and a walk while striking out 3. Boby Johnson picked up his second save, striking out 2 of the four batters he faced in the seventh.

Independence scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two just after the 'Hounds had scored 5 times in the top of the frame.

Gave Franklin had an eighth-inning grand slam as one of his 2 hits. He drove in 5 runs. Mackay Williams went 3 for 5 for Fort Scott.

Five runs in the bottom of the third inning of Saturday's opener gave Fort Scott a cushion that held up. Williams belted a 2-run homer in that inning while Andrade and Taylor Fajardo each had solo homers later in the game.

Andrade was 3 for 4 at the plate while Williams and Fajardo were each 2 for 3.

Miles Wagner (4-0) allowed 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 2 in the first 5 innings. Conner Leach had 2 strikeouts in the final 2 innings.

Independence scored 4 runs in the top of the eighth inning to go in front 12-10. Fort Scott answered with 4 in the bottom of the frame. Darren Hasch hit a 2-run scoring double that tied the score. Malik Sams scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Then Jacob Biller plated the insurance run with his single to center, plating Hasch.

Andrade was 3 for 4 at the plate while Andrew Tanous and Whitworth each went 3 for 5.

Banman (1-1) was the winning pitcher in relief, going 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out 1.

A doubleheader scheduled for today versus the Rockhurst junior varsity at Kansas City, Mo., has been cancelled. The 'Hounds (7-5 East, 19-5 overall) host Labette Thursday in a division doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lions Field.
