Both Tiger teams draw Spring Hill in Sub-State

Tuesday, March 1, 2016

Both of Fort Scott High School's basketball teams will take part in the Louisburg Class 4A-Division I Sub-State Tournament this weekend with both teams taking on Spring Hill in the first round.

The same match-ups will take place in both brackets Thursday and Friday with the only difference being which of Fort Scott and Spring Hill will be the home team in their match ups.

Fort Scott's girls (7-13) are seeded No. 3 in their bracket and will face No. 2 Spring Hill (11-9) at 6 p.m. Thursday night in Louisburg. The Tigers are coming off a Southeast Kansas League loss to Independence Friday night that closed out the regular season. Spring Hill defeated Ottawa in a Frontier League contest, 44-38, to close out the regular season.

Paola (18-2), last year's State runner-up to Bishop Miege, is the No. 1 seed and will face host Louisburg (3-17) at 7:30 Thursday night in a rematch of a game that took place Friday night at Louisburg. Paola won that one easily, 74-30, to clinch its fourth consecutive Frontier League championship.

Fort Scott has not faced any of these teams this season while the other three are all members of the Frontier League. Paola's only losses came to Kansas City-Piper, which is also 18-2, and at Baldwin in a league game.

Fort Scott's boys (11-9), which beat Paola on its home court to advance to State last season, lost at Independence Friday night but still come into a 6 p.m. Friday match-up with Spring Hill as winners of 9 of their last 12 games. Spring Hill (10-10) lost to Ottawa, 46-42, in a Pioneer League contest last Friday.

The Tigers won the No. 2 seed in the tournament outright with Spring Hill's loss, otherwise the designated home team for Friday's game would have been determined with a coin toss.

Paola (18-2) is the top seed on the boys' side of the bracket and plays Louisburg (6-14) at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. The Panthers took the Pioneer League title with that win. Their only losses came to Independence, Mo.-Truman in their season opener and to St. George-Rock Creek in the semifinal of the Burlington Tournament in January.

Like the girls, Tiger boys have not played any of the teams in this Sub-State this season.

Both championship games will be held at Louisburg Saturday night. The girls' final will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at approximately 7:30. The winners of those games go on to the Class 4A-Division I State Tournament at Salina's Bicentennial Center Match 9-12.
