'Hound men extend winning streak to 3

Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Fort Scott Community College's men extended their winning streak to three games Saturday by beating Highland, 70-65, in Jayhawk Conference-Division II play.

The Greyhounds (1-0 conference, 7-13 overall) held on to win their conference opener even though Highland (1-2, 11-10) outscored them 38-32 in the second half.

Fort Scott's free-throw shooting was the major factor as the 'Hounds made 23 of 29 attempts. Highland was 13 of 16 from the charity stripe.

Fort Scott also won despite shooting only 35 percent from the field on 21 of 60, getting no points at all from its bench -- which was 0-for-18 from the floor -- and getting outrebounded, 36-23.

Dametrius Walker scored 24 points to lead the 'Hounds with Eddie Sims adding 19 and Jeremiah Fleming scoring 15. Brandon Hashim led Highland with 30 points but no other Scottie had more than 9.

This was the seventh loss for Highland in its last eight games.

The Greyhounds -- technically the defending champion as the division didn't exist last season -- are a half-game behind division leader Johnson County (2-0, 18-2), which is ranked No. 4 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll. The Cavaliers beat Brown Mackie, 75-65, in a Region VI post-season seeding game Saturday.

Going with the Region VI seeding records, Johnson County is 3-0 followed by Fort Scott, Highland and Kansas City all tied for No. 2 at the moment, each at 2-1.

Johnson County visits Arnold Arena Wednesday night for a key conference and region game. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
