Hill, North Arkansas drop FSCC men in Ark City

ARKANSAS CITY -- Fort Scott Community College's men went down to defeat in both games of the Cowley Classic over the weekend as they played teams with a combined record of 18-3.

These were the first two of seven consecutive road games for the Greyhounds, who will not play at home again until January 16.

Friday's opponent was Hill College (Texas), which is ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA Division I Poll. The Rebels (10-1) suffered their first loss of the season Saturday night, falling to Cowley 76-73.

Hill shot 53 percent from the field in its win over Fort Scott (3-9), making 32 of 60 field-goal attempts and going 11 of 25 from 3-point range. Brandon Jones and Devocio Butler scored 17 points each, combining to make 13 of 19 field-goal attempts.

Jeremiah Fleming led Fort Scott with 23 points as he made 6 of 7 3-point attempts. Tyler Owens added 12 points for the Greyhounds, who got just 8 points from their other three starters and 8 off the bench while shooting 36 percent on 18 of 50.

Saturday, North Arkansas (8-2) defeated Fort Scott, 90-67, as they also shot 53 percent, making 35 of 66 total shots and 13 of 32 triples. Jalen Olds, a 6' 5" freshman scored 29 points on 14-of-16 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Dametrius Walker led Fort Scott with 19 points followed by John Freeman with 15 and Evan Brull with 12. The Greyhounds shot slightly better from the field, 42 percent on 25 of 59, but were outrebounded 47-27.

This was the second meeting between the Greyhounds and Pioneers this season. North Arkansas won 103-65 at Harrison on Novvember 17. The teams will meet for the third time on February 9 at Arnold Arena.

Fort Scott will play in a classic at Beatrice, Neb. this weekend. Friday, FSCC will take on host Southeast, Neb. Saturday, the 'Hounds will face Central-Columbus. Game times both days is at 4 p.m.
