UJH teams off to good starts

UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown Middle School's volleyball team will field 10 girls on the eight- grade team and 12 for the seventh grade as Julie Schafer and Paula Coyan return to lead the team.

The veteran Schafer, in her 15th year, coaches the eighth graders and oversaw a 6-3 mark last year.

This year's eighth graders are Cheyanne Carpenter, Alissa Button, Annie Cagle, Lauren Shinn, Morgan Coulter, Libby Franks, Jacquie Hampton, Sivanah McAnulty, Makenzie Brown, and Kaitlyn Hanks.

All are primarily hitters with the main setters being Cheyanne Carpenter and Makenzie Brown.

"The eighth graders are a good group of girls to work with," Schafer said. "All are returning from last year.

"We have two new faces in Alissa Button and Kaitlyn Hanks. "

The season is underway and the Eagles are off to a good start, winning both of their matches so far.

Uniontown won at home over Altoona Midway Sept. 4, 25-14, 25-12. Brown had 11 points in the first game and 10 points the second game.

At home against Oswego Sept. 10, the Eagles prevailed, 25-23, 25-12. Brown scored six points the first game. For the second game, Carpenter had six points and Cagle five points.

The seventh-graders, coached by Coyan, are Becky Goebel, Ashton Church, Rhian Gorman, Aiden Holt, Kaylee Davis, McKenna Lord, Brianna Stokes, Paige Mason, Karleigh Schoenberger, Katie Fowler, Libby Schaaf, and Jada Allen.

"These girls have big potential and good skills. They are very smart and are very sound, fundamentally," Coyan says. She also said she is expecting good things out of this group this season.

The seventh graders played Altoona Midway Sept. 4. They won 25-1, 25-15. In the first set, Stokes served for nine points, Holt six, and Goebel four. In the second set, Allen scored five points and Schaaf four.

Against Oswego Sept. 10, Uniontown won 25-10, 27-25. Stokes led with 14 points in the first set while Goebel with five. In the second game, Stokes served for with 12 points to lead the winners.

Both teams will play on the road for the first time this week when they travel to Northeast-Arma Thursday.
