Loretta George/Tribune photo When Alvin Metcalf, director of security at Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center, read a Tribune story about the need for trimming trees around a City of Fort Scott welcome sign, he asked Bourbon County Sheriff Bill Martin permission to take inmates on a work trip. The sheriff and City Manager Dave Martin both said yes to jail inmates trimming trees and brush around the "Welcome to Fort Scott" sign on U.S. Highway 69 on the north edge of the city limits. Pictured are the honor pod work crew along with Metcalf and Jason LaRue, corrections officer, walking to the site Tuesday morning.
