'Hounds outscore Baker JV 30-1 in twinbill

Fort Scott Community College's baseball team broke out of a slump impressively Tuesday, sweeping the Baker University junior varsity 19-0 and 11-1. Neither game went past the fifth inning.

The Greyhounds (7-14) posted their first sweep since the opening doubleheader of the season versus Cloud County. They came into Tuesday's play with losses in eight of their last nine outings.

This is just the second time this season the 'Hounds have won consecutive games. They won their first three of the season -- two on February 13 and one the next day against Cloud.

Fort Scott had 16 hits and scored in every inning of the opener, not even needing it's half of the sixth at all. The Greyhounds belted three home runs.

Nick Banman belted his first homer of the season in the second inning with two on and one out as part of a 7-run frame. Josh Whisler hit a 2-run shot, his third of the season, in the fourth. Gabe Durney hit his first of the year, also a 2-run belt, later in the fourth.

Whisler was 3 for 3 for the 'Hounds, scored 3 runs and drove in 4. Dalton Rook was 3 for 4, scoring twice and driving in 2. Banman was 2 for 2 with 3 RBI. Duerney was 2 for 2 with 4 RBI.

Bobby Pierce (1-1) was the winning pitcher, allowing 3 hits and 1 walk in the first 3 innings.

Kaden Shaffer hit a solo homer with 2 out in the fourth inning of the nightcap as part of a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Whisler, Durney, Jake Harvey, Ethan Rosehill and Jacob Biller each had 2 hits. Durney also drove in 2 runs.

Malik Sams (1-1) allowed no earned runs on 5 hits in the first 3 innings. He struck out 3 and did not walk anyone.

Fort Scott hosts Independence at 1 p.m. Thursday for a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader.
