PARSONS -- Fort Scott High School's boys posted 31 points in the second quarter of their Southeast Kansas League battle with Parsons here Friday night. Then the Tigers had to withstand a Viking rally in the third and rely on their defense in the fourth before prevailing, 63-40, and keeping pace with first-place Independence, which saw Tate Turner score 33 points in a 46-43 nail-biter over Labette County.

Fort Scott's girls won for the second time in their last four outings, holding back Parsons, 40-36.

Boys: Fort Scott 63, Parsons 40.

The Tigers (6-1 SEK, 9-5 overall) scored 10 of the games' first 13 points and never trailed. They also capped the first quarter with a 8-3 run to make it an 18-8 game.

The lead slowly grew over the first part of the third. Then Jacob Bradbury connected on a 3-point shot with just under five minutes to go to spark a 23-5 run to end the half. The Vikings (1-6, 8-7) scored only one field goal in that time.

Kaleb DeLaTorre hit the third of his four 3-point goals with two minutes to go to make it 39-17. Then he followed with a layup and Wyatt Reehl scored a 3-pointer himself.

A.J. Smith took a steal on an inbound pass as the clock ran down and got a shot in just before the buzzer to make it 49-19 at the half, capping the Tigers' first 30-plus-point quarter since scoring exactly 30 in the fourth quarter of a 3-point loss at Coffeyville on Feb. 7, 2011.

The Tiger lead eventually grew to 32 when Chase Brown scored early in the third to make it 53-21. But then Parsons went on a 14-0 run to trim that margin to 18.

That was as close as the Vikings could get and the Tigers maintained a 58-37 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The teams combined for a total of 8 points in the fourth quarter. Donte Gress cored for Parsons to get the Vikes within 19. DeLaTorre scored his fourth triple with 5:12 to go and Mason Knopp made two free throws to make it 63-39 with around three minutes left.

DeLaTorre finished with 14 points for the Tigers while Knopp added 13. Fort Scott made 10 3-pointers as a team.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- The Tigers (14-0) remained unbeaten with a 48-44 win over Parsons. Grant Goldston scored 21 points and Josh Hudiburg added 12.

FRESHMEN -- Friday's score was not available at press time but the Tigers posted a 64-40 win at Independence Tuesday. Jessie Lawrence led the way with 15 points followed by Caleb Rhoads with 12.

Girls: Fort Scott 40, Parsons 36.

Tiger girls (2-5, 3-11) defeated the Vikings (2-5, 4-11) and moved out of last place in the SEK into a three-way tie for fifth after Coffeyville (2-5, 8-7) scored just 2 points in the second half of a 39-14 home loss to Pittsburg.

Fort Scott held on to win despite failing to score in the fourth quarter until 45 seconds remained. Parsons wasn't doing much better offensively, scoring the first 2 points on a Shay Kelley basket to close the deficit to 32-30 but then not scoring again until there were only 20 seconds left in the game.

Kelsey Stanley broke the Tigers' scoring drought with 45 seconds to go, taking a pass from Ashley Cook in for a layup. Then Cook made two free throws to make it 36-32.

Megan Hizey scored a 3-point goal to end Parsons' scoreless run with 20 second left. Stanley made two free throws with 15.9 seconds to go.

Brenna Forbes made a 3-pointer for the Vikings to bring them within 2. But they had to foul and Cook made the game-clinching free throws with five seconds left.

Cook led the Tigers with 18 points followed by Stanley with 13. Kenya Kelley paced Parsons with 14 points but none in the fourth. Hizey finished with 10 points.

The Tigers scored the game's first 10 points as Cook hit a pair of triples in the opening run. But Parsons got back within 15-10 at the end of the first and then scored the first 4 of the second.

Elisha Hasenplaugh's basket capped a 6-0 run for the Tigers to make it 21-14 with 2:50 left in the half. But Parsons caught up at the half on two Kenya Kelly layups and a Shay Kelley 3-pointer that beat the buzzer.

Fort Scott scored 8 of the last 10 of the third quarter with a layup from the paint by Cook making it 32-28.

Both Tiger teams will play three straight home games beginning Tuesday with league contests versus Chanute.
