Fort Scott Community College's women improved to 4-1 on the season, leading throughout in a 66-47 victory over the Ottawa University junior varsity in its home opener at Arnold Arena Tuesday night.
There was one tie, very early on at 5-5. But the Greyhounds led by 11 points, 36-25, at the half and the margin over the length of the second half.
Fort Scott head coach Katie Reihmann said that she and her team approached this game the way they would any other.
"No matter who it we're playing, it's all the same," Reihmann said.
A stronger post game has also helped. Retuning sophomores Carlie Wilhelmi (6' 2") and Jessica McAdams (6' 1") combined for 23 points and 16 rebounds in the contest.
"Being able to go inside more this year, the posts have been playing very well and they've been physical down low," Reihmann said.
Wilhelmi is the starter and has showed a willingness to be physical in the paint, something she struggled with last season.
"She worked so hard in the off-season and it's helped her," Reihmann said. "She gained a knowledge on how to play inside and has become a lot tougher on the inside. And I think competing with Jessica made her really improved. They work hard every single day together and it's been great for our program."
Having eight returning sophomores has also helped. They took their lumps during a 4-27 season last year but have picked up a win against Division I Dodge City.
"Our sophomores have helped this year in having that drive and experience and the want to win," Reihmann said.
After the early 5-5 tie, Fort Scott scored the next 6 to take the lead for good, the first 4 scored by sophomore Amanda Cicero off the bench.
There was no scoring explosion, but a series of small runs helped widen the margin. A Sierra Shoulders 3-point goal made it 21-12 with 8:44 left in the first half. A McAdams layup capped a 9-0 run which made it 30-16 with 3:27 remaining.
Freshman Kamiron Luptak hit a 3-point shot that made it 36-25 at the half.
Andrea Valadez scored 13 points to lead the Greyhounds followed by McAdams with 12 and Wilhelmi and Kayleigh Haggard each with 11. Callie Tucker scored 20 to lead Ottawa and Kaitlynn Walker added 16. They made 15 of Ottawa's 18 field goals.
Fort Scott outrebounded Ottawa, 52-36. The second-half margin on the boards was 33-15 as Wilhelmi grabbed 8 in the half. She, McAdams and Luptak finished tied for the team high with 8 boards each.
Fort Scott split games at Dodge City over the weekend, beating the host team Friday and losing to Barton on Saturday.
A 61-58 win over host Division I Dodge City snapped a seven-game losing streak against teams from the Jayhawk Conference-Western Division. This was the first game against a West team for Reihmann. Carlie Wilhelmi led the way for the 'Hounds with 17 points on 7-of-15 field-goal shooting. Andrea Valadez added 12 points.
The Conquistadors led 27-21 at the half.
Saturday, Barton took an 83-56 win, outscoring the Greyhounds by 30 points in the second half. Katrina Roenfeldt led all scorers with 24 points for Barton while Phikala Anthony added 19.
Sierra Shoulders led Fort Scott with 15 points followed by Kamiron Luptak with 14 and Wilhelmi with 12.
The Greyhounds will play in a classic at Kansas City Kansas Community College this weekend. They'll face Penn Valley Friday at 2 p.m. and Ellsworth (Iowa) Saturday at Noon.
NOTES -- Fort Scott's last win over a Western Division team came on March 2, 2010 in a first-round Region VI Division I Tournament game at Cloud County, 61-60, under then-coach Diana Couch. Fort Scott was 5-1 versus the West that year but went 0-5 against that side the next season and 0-2 in 2011-12....
