Scoring in every quarter, Fort Scott High's ninth grade football team won Tuesday night's game with Independence in just about every way imaginable: on the ground, through the air, and via the defensive takeaway.

The result was a 41-6 throttling, with standouts aplenty on both sides of the ball for the Tigers.

In winning for the fourth time this season in six outings, it was the defense that set up the first Fort Scott score.

Colby Page's recovery of a botched handoff at the Indpeendence 4-yard line set up the Tigers' first score, which came on the on the very next play. Gunnar Brown couldn't get a handle on the pitchout but didn't miss a beat, picking up the ball 5 yards behind the line and then getting that back and the final 4 for the score. Jesse Jones' conversion kick missed to the left but the hosts were up 6-0 with 5:19 showing.

Independence lost the ball again, this time with Elijah Wright recovering near midfield for the home team. Three running plays moved the ball to the 44-yard line, where Jessie Lawrence broke off right tackle and went the distance. Jones' kick was good and the lead was 13-0 as the first quarter ended.

The visitors then mounted what turned out to be their only scoring drive, capped with a 5-yard scoring strike from quarterback Josh Pralle to Calvin with 1:11 left in the half. The Tigers stopped a 2-point conversion pass yards short of the goal line.

Just two plays later, the Tigers got that score back, with quarterback Jesse Jones finding a streaking Zarek Fewell behind the defense for 59 yards and the TD with 54 seconds showing. Lawrence ran in the 2-pointer for a 21-6 edge.

The Tigers also scored on their first possession of the second half, sparked by the running of Fewell, Brown and Lawrence. Jones took it in to paydirt himself from 2 yards out and added the PAT for a 28-6 lead with 28 seconds left in the third.

One play following a defensive stop on fourth down, Fewell struck for a 78-yard score, breaking three tackles and zigzagging his way to the end zone. Jones' kick missed but the lead was 34-6 with 4:57 left.

The Tigers finished out the scoring when they got the ball back on an interception by Frank Miller at his won 44. Five running plays covered the distance, with Lawrence getting 23 of those. Derek Bollinger got the final 7 yards and the score. Jones tacked on the extra point to close the scoring with 2:36 left.

This game and a junior varsity contest versus Independence were originally scheduled for Monday but called off due to the weather and field conditions. The JV contest was cancelled entirely.

Both the freshmen and JV teams play their last games of the season Monday night at Chanute.
