Hall putting younger squad on court at UHS
Three Rivers League volleyball power Uniontown may be rebuilding more than usual.
Yet, with a team that consistently finds a way to challenge for postseason honors and boasting a decorated veteran coach, few would bet against the Eagles.
Head coach Jackie Hall, with 33 years in the ranks all at UHS, saw last year's team go 29-11 and finish as the Class 2A Sub-State runner-up. Hall and assistant Amber Ericson lost six seniors off that team.
"We are a 'young' 'new' team," Hall said. "There will be many new faces on the court.
"I think some schools might be counting us out, but I think they will be surprised when they face us on the court. I really like the way the team is coming together and improving daily."
At this point, Hall said the various positions on the team should have good depth.
The setter position will most likely be handled by senior Jana Wilkinson and sophomore Kate Coll.
The libero will be senior Michaela Nietfeld with freshman Blair Rockhold as the other defensive specialist.
Outside hitters are expected to be senior Tyeesha Perry, sophomore Holly Shinn, sophomore Shalina Harper, and junior Lindsay Nietfeld.
The middle hitter/blockers will come from group including freshman Danielle Nading, sophomore Haley Ruggles, and Lindsay Nietfeld.
Others coming in from the bench will be sophomore Daryan Herring on defense and freshman Megan Smith at outside or opposite hitter.
Rounding out the team are senior Giulia Bertea, junior Megan Blythe, sophomore Jimme Keller, and freshmen Keely Goodridge, Cassidy Fuhrman, Madison Wilkinson, Nikki Bolinger, and Robyn Martin.
"The Three Rivers League is always tough," said Hall of her team's opponents. "I look for Jayhawk Linn, St. Paul, Oswego, Pleasanton and us to be in the mix of things.
"We know we must play great defense and be extremely smart at the net. We must make good choices and minimize errors on the court."
Uniontown played in the Three Rivers League Tournament at Pleasanton Saturday. Due to space constraints, those results will be presented in the Friday edition along with Tuesday's scores from Erie.
