FSCC volleyball has strong showing at scrimmage
Fort Scott Community College's traveled to El Dorado Saturday to take part in a scrimmage hosted by Butler Community College. The Greyhounds faced Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division rival Independence and Western Division squads Butler, Dodge City and Pratt.
Fort Scott head coach Lindsay Hill reported that her team won all eight sets it played. FSCC's program will continue to play at the NJCAA Division II level this season while Pratt and Butler are Division I programs.
"After the work that these young ladies have put in during preseason, it was good to see them perform well," Hill said. "When we made substitutions, we didn't break stride. Each team member gave their best effort and did their jobs at a high rate."
Hill seemed especially pleased with the play of Fredonia sophomore Shelbey Baker, whom she said will "have a fabulous sophomore season."
The Greyhounds, 19-18 last season, open the 2014 season Friday and Saturday by hosting the Fort Scott Tournament at Arnold Arena. There are seven teams in the tournament, each of which will play four matches. Play begins at 9 a.m. both days.
Fort Scott will face Wentworth Millitary Academy at 1 p.m. and Pratt at 7 p.m. Friday. The Greyhounds will take on East Central, Mo., at 11 a.m. and Labette at 7 p.m. Saturday.
NOTES -- Butler has decided to return to the Division I level and has been shifted back into the Western Division. This means that each Eastern Division school is Division II and each Western Division school is Division I....
