Rienbolt second in 4A 1,600 meters
WICHITA -- Fort Scott High School senior Katren Rienbolt finished second in the Class 4A girls' 1,600-meter run at the Kansas State Track and Field Championships here Saturday while teammate Cassidy Westhoff finished fourth.
Rienbolt was attempting to defend State titles in both this and Friday's 3,200-meter run but came up short. Rienbolt, who qualified for State in at least one event all four years, finished fourth in the longer race while Westhoff, a sophomore, placed third.
Rienbolt led the 1,600 after each of the first three laps. But Topeka Hayden senior Mary Kate Franklin completed the fourth and final lap in 1:14.15 while Rienbolt needed 1:20.30. Franklin finished as the winner in 5:08.96 for her first State track title, and Rienbolt was second in 5:10.80. Girard freshman Callie Logue was third in 5;11.36 and Westhoff finished fourth in 5:12.69.
Logue, won won the Class 4A individual cross country championship in the fall, claimed the 3,200 on Friday in 11:14.63. Franklin was second in 11:19.16 with Westhoff third in 11:26.15 and Rienbolt fourth in 11:29.20.
Rienbolt, who will run and play basketball at Pittsburg State next season, finished her high school career with six track medals and a cross-country State title that she won in 2012. These are the first two State track medals for Westhoff.
Fort Scott sophomore Nick Woods won his first State medal Saturday in his second appearance in discus. After finishing 16th last year, he claimed seventh with an effort of 149 feet even that he produced on his second-to-last throw of the competition. Ottawa senior Kord Ferguson successfully defended his title with a new State record throw of 206' 2".
Sophomore Josh Hudiburg finished in eighth place in boys' javelin on Friday, missing out on a medal in his first State appearance by less than one foot. Hudiburg's best mark of 174' 11" came on his first throw. Paola senior Andrew Henn, the defending champ, was the winner with a throw of 202' 3".
The top seven finishers in each event medal. If preliminaries are held in an event, the top eight advanced to finals.
Senior Jillian Lattimer finished in 12th place in girls' javelin Saturday morning with a mark of 109' 11", recorded on her first throw. The winning mark was 147' 10" by Baldwin sophomore Kelsey Kehl.
Keaira Meadows finished 13th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.48 seconds. Coffeyville posted a 1-2 finish in the finals as Devin Cosper won in 12.34 and Andrea Newton was second in 12.41.
Michaela Webb was 13th in the 200-meter preliminaries in 28.13. Newton won the finals in 25.16.
Webb was 14th in the preliminaries of the 400 meters in 1:03.49. Baldwin senior Morgan Lober was the winner in the finals in 57.33 seconds.
Vince Tome finished 14th in the prelims of the boys' 200 meters in 23.61. Colin Coleman, a senior from Perry-Lecompton, broke the Class 4A State mark in the finals with a time of 21.87.
Uniontown's only State qualifier was freshman Salina Harper in girls' javelin. She finished 11th with a makr of 103' 2". Allison Zerbe of Eskridge-Mission Valley won the event with a new Class 2A State record of 151' 1", shattering the mark set by Sublette's Shalee Lenning on 2005 of 147' 5".
