Nellie Leona Kalm
Nellie Leona Kalm, age 95, a former resident of Garland, Kan., and Presbyterian Village died early Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Guest Home Estates in Fort Scott, Kan. She was born Jan. 25, 1919, in Crawford County, Kan., the daughter of Silas Pence and Maude Bowen Pence. Nellie married Lewis Hurl Kalm on January 25, 1936, at Girard, Kan. He preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 2013. Nellie had been employed by Food Town Grocery Store for over 25 years. She was a member of the Community Christian Church. Nellie enjoyed playing cards and dominoes as well as spending time with her grandchildren. In later years, she enjoyed bowling and while in the nursing home enjoyed playing Bingo. She had also been active with the Garland area Idle Hour Club.
Survivors include her children, Raymond Kalm and wife, Kay, Garland, Kan., Kathryn Doerfler and husband, Dave, Fort Scott, and Lewis Kalm and wife, Jeanne, Fort Scott. Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Dixie Kalm, Arcadia, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Donna Pence, Independence, Mo.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Keith Kalm; a granddaughter, Kayla Kalm Kutz; a great-grandson, Logan Clark and four brothers, Clarence, Everett, Harold and Clyde Pence.
Rev. Kevin Moyers will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 23 at the Community Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Sheffield Cemetery at Arcadia, Kan. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Community Christian Church and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S.
