On Jan. 5, four members of Fort Scott High School's wrestling team walked away winners in their respective weight classes at the Dick Burns Mat Classic in Bonner Springs. The Tigers also took home the team title in addition to nine total FSHS wrestlers earning medals at the event. The Tigers scored 204 ½ points to win the title by 28 ½ points over the host school, who came into the tournament ranked second in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.
Winners included Jerad Heckman (126 pounds), Jacob Durossette (145) pounds, John Metcalf and Brendan Blackburn (285), each winning their weight classes. Victor Hughes finished second at 138 pounds. Tyler Sharp (120), John Hughes (160) and B.J. Wilson (220) each finished third in their brackets. Cole Stewart placed fourth at 113 pounds. A few days after the tournament, FSHS debuted at No. 6 in the Class 4A Wrestling coaches poll.
During the first weekend of February, Durossette and Metcalf also took home titles from the Rose Hill Invitational. Durossette who was a top seed in the tournament, and at the time ranked No. 3 in Class 4A at 145 pounds, proceeded to go 5-0. Metcalf, who was in the 195-pound class, was ranked No. 5 in 4A at the time. Metcalf won the championship match in a 7-1 decision over Concordia's Skyler Hittle, who was ranked second in Class 4A.
In mid-February, six Tigers earned berths into the Class 4A State Tournament at Salina. Two members from the Tigers' wrestling squad were crowned champions at the Pittsburg Class 4A Regional Tournament. Durossette defeated Chanute's Jared Fiscus in overtime of the 145-pound championship match. Durossette was also named Regional Wrestler of the Year. Hughes won the 138-pound championship match defeating Osawatomie's Andrew Canon 3-0. On Feb. 23, Hughes medaled in the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament, finishing third in the 138-pound bracket. Durossette at 145 pounds and Heckman at 126 pounds finished fourth in their weight classes, while Metcalf (195) took fifth in his bracket. Overall, the Tigers finished in eighth place in the team standings, edging Chanute 59.5 to 59.
Ultimately, eight members of the Tigers wrestling team received All-Southeast Kansas League honors based on a vote of league coaches. Tigers named to the First Team included Sharp, Hughes, Durossette and Metcalf. Four Tigers were named Honorable Mention wrestlers: Heckman, Hughes, Marques Floyd (182) and Blackburn (285). In May, Hughes signed a letter of intent to wrestle for the Swedes of Bethany College, Lindsborg, beginning next season.
Fort Scott High School senior Shelby Maycumber signed a letter of intent on Jan. 22 to play softball at Allen County Community College. Maycumber was also a member of the FSHS girls' basketball team. FSHS senior pitcher Kelsey Simons signed a letter of intent to play softball at Fort Scott Community College beginning with the 2014 season. FSHS senior Nick Allen signed a letter of intent on Feb. 6 to play football at FSCC next season. FSHS senior Chris Davenport signed a letter of intent on Feb. 6 to play football at FSCC.
In late-March, FSHS received recognition from the Kansas State High School Activities Association for Sportsmanship at the Class 4A State Basketball Tournament, which was held March 6-9 in Salina. Fort Scott and state basketball champion Wamego were awarded medals and a plaque by the KSHSAA.
Uniontown High School
Three Uniontown basketball players were selected to the All-League basketball teams by Three Rivers League coaches. Senior Brenton Esslinger was voted to the boys' First Team. Hayden Rathburn was a First Team selection for the girls', and DaNicha Robinson was selected to the second team. The Uniontown Eagles girls' softball team won the Class 2-1A Regional Tournament at George Warren Field in Uniontown on May. 15, defeating Yates Center 10-4 in the finals. The win punched the Eagles ticket into the Class 2-1A State Tournament in Emporia, the program's first. The Eagles were defeated in the first round of the State Tournament, losing 2-1 to Oskaloosa.
Greyhounds
The Fort Scott Community College men's basketball team, led by sophomore Austin Danner, picked up their first playoff victory in 44 years on March 2. The Greyhounds defeated Highland Community College 85-84 in overtime. The win advanced FSCC to the Region VI Division II Tournament semifinal against top seed Brown Mackie. Danner scored 25 points in the victory over HCC. Prior to this, FSCC's last playoff victory came on March 5, 1969, in the sub-regional championship game against Coffeyville at Chanute, 61-54.
On March 28, FSCC pitcher Payton Logan threw a no-hitter against Evangel University junior varsity, in a 10-0 victory. The freshman left-hander struck out 8 in 5 innings. The game only went 5 innings due to the run rule. In early-April, FSCC freshman outfielder Ka'ai Tom was named Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Player of the Week. During the week of April 1-7, Tom batted .556, scored 10 runs and stole three bases.
On April 9, FSHS softball pitcher Kyenne Wade tossed a no-hitter against Parsons. The sophomore struck out 15 batters in a dominant performance at Don Hewett Field.
