Monday's Uniontown Class 3-2-1A Regional Golf tournament was almost exactly at the halfway point when rain arrived and drove everyone's scores up at Woodland Hills Golf Course.
The field slogged through and Uniontown's girls finished in third place to qualify all four members to next Monday's State Tournament at Southwind Country Club in Garden City. The Eagles also had two medalists, Torrie Hathaway and Jordan Mason.
"We feel really good about it," Uniontown head coach Jason Tourtillott said about the outcome. "We actually were hoping to get second but struggled on the back. To get third, this team played about as well as they could have in the rain."
The Eagles shot 469 as a team, finishing 13 strokes ahead of Fredonia for the third team-qualifying spot. Every member of the top three teams and the five best golfers who were not on qualifying teams advance to State.
Caney Valley, which had five of its players medal, won the team title with a 397. Eureka followed at 442.
The top three individuals were from Caney Valley. Desiree Nelson won the championship with a 96, one stroke ahead of teammate Cortney Gardner while Jayd Bentley was third with 100.
Hathaway and Eureka's Reagan Boone went to a playoff for the fourth-place medal after they tied at 101. Boone won the playoff on the first hole.
Jordan Mason finished as the ninth-place medalist after winning a playoff on the first hole against Fredonia's Dani Comstock after each tied at 109.
Hathaway shot 46 as her group played the back nine first then ended up with a 55 on the front nine after the rain came. Mason shot a 49 on the first nine holes but then settled for a 60 on the back after the rain came.
"Torrie played great," Tourtillott said. "Jordan Mason had a great front nine, too. That was her personal best, 49. That's what really helped us. If they could have done that in the second nine, it could have been second place."
This will be the second trip to State for each of them. Hathaway qualified last year as an individual. Mason was part of the team that qualified for State in 2011.
Haven Bradbury shot 114 for Uniontown, which put her in 14th place. Anna Oberle finished with a 145.
"Haven had a good day for us as well," Tourtillott said. "Anna had a rough day where nothing seemed to go right."
Tourtillott looks forward to another week on the golf course then going on the nearly 350-mile trip to Western Kansas.
"Our season-long goal was to make this milestone," Tourtillott says. "The next would be to get someone to place in the top 20 at State in Garden City next Monday."
NOTES -- Syracuse has won 3-2-1A State each of the last two years. Defending individual champion Taylor Alderman of Council Grove has graduated. However, last year's runner-up and third-place finishers, senior Kiah Rash and junior Sydney Brown, both of Syracuse, should be able to qualify from their home Regional....
