Tiger volleyball fourth at Louisburg

LOUISBURG -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball team finished in fourth place at the Louisburg Tournament here Saturday, going 2-2 on the day.

In their first two matches, the Tigers (15-10) defeated two Class 6A schools: Olathe North in 3 sets, 18-25, 25-7, 25-14, and Shawnee Mission East, 25-12, 25-17. Louisburg, ranked No. 4 in Class 4A by the Kansas Volleyball Association, won the final match of pool play, 25-19, 25-11.

The Tigers fell to Class 6A Blue Valley North in the semifinals, 25-13, 25-12. They also lost to Basehor-Linwood in the third-place match, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22.

"I was proud of the girls for their play," FSHS head coach Carol Bingesser said. "Louisburg is tough tournament for us and we always see really good competition. So I was really proud of how well they competed.

"Katie Gorman did an excellent job of digging some really hard-hit balls, giving us the opportunity to make some good plays. Ashley Cook ran the offense well, scoring a lot of points on dump sets and getting good sets to our hitters. Brianne Lawrence had a big day serving. Once she gets in the groove, she has an awesome serve."

Stats for the day were provided, so listed are combined totals for the five matches. Cook was credited with 66 assists. Gorman compiled 60 digs. Ericah Shoemaker tallied 29 kills, Cook 20, Lawrence 15 and DeLane Gray 12. Lawrence served 10 aces, Cook 9 and Gray and Maddi Allen 5 each.

The Tigers will host a Southeast Kansas League triangular Thursday at the FSHS gymnasium. Labette County and Independence will be the opponents. Play begins at 5 p.m.
