Chamber members catch up on events
The Fort Scott Chamber of Commerce members gathered at the Old Fort Genealogical Society of Southeastern Kansas, Inc. for the weekly coffee Thursday. As always, members can tell what is going on in their community, or their lives and the host member gets time about their business/non-profit.
Since family is the most significant aspect in ones life, "learning about our family's history in important," said Ken Lyons, president of the genealogical society. "It's (the library) a valuable resource for Fort Scott history," as well and encouraged people to come visit the facility.
The OFGS library is open from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is located in the lower level of Memorial Hall, at the corner of 3rd and National Streets.
* February's Chamber announcer, J.D. Handley, commended the city for cleaning the streets during the recent snow storm, with Dave Martin chiming in that the city began planning for the weather event 24-48 hours before, adding "they and the police and fire did a great job."
* Peggy Cummings, Bourbon County Arts Council, announced that March 3 is the deadline for entering their art exhibition on March 13.
* Ken Lyons said Boy Scout Troop #114 fundraiser at Pizza Hut is next Tuesday, with 10 percent of all purchases will going to this local Boy Scout Troop.
* Andy LaSota, Fort Scott Tribune, brought the premier edition of Fort Scott Magazine and said they can be picked up at the Tribune office, the Chamber office and local businesses.
* Lynnette Emmerson, handed out flyers regarding a meal fundraiser for Fort Scott Manor's Walk to End Alzheimer's team, next Thursday, March 7. Six dollars will buy a home cooked chicken noodle dinner, delivered. Orders will cease at 9 a.m. that day. To place an order, email lemmerson@ckt.net or call (620) 223-3120 or fax (620) 223-0672.
* County Commissioner Allen Warren said public works crews also have been out cleaning roadways and added "We've been wiping out mailboxes going down these county roads. There was a wreck yesterday with a plow, the driver wasn't hurt, but he was pinned for a bit."
* Deb Madison, Medicalodges Fort Scott, announced that the facility raised $823 for the recent General Transportation need and thanked those present for their support.
* Jerry Witt, reminded members that the Rankin Brothers Show, sponsored by Cheney-Witt Chapel, is March 16 at Memorial Hall. Tickets are free and a few are left at the Chamber office.
* Skitch Allen encouraged those present to support the high school athletic teams.
* Elder Doug Bowman, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, said the LDS church has the biggest genealogy research service in the nation and can be contacted for more information.
* Reed Hartford reminded the group of the Lenten Lunch, March 6 at the First Christian Church, a time of "soup, fellowship and a devotion."
* Mark McCoy stated the fish fry at St. Mary's Queen of Angels Catholic Church was cancelled last week due to inclment weather and resumes today.
* The Chamber annual dinner is March 7 at the Liberty Theater, with tickets available at the Chamber office, said Bryan Holt, adding "Please let us know if you are coming."
* Lindsay Madison said the election candidate forum is 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Danny & Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center at Fort Scott Community College. The doors open at 5:30 p.m.
* The legislative coffee is from 9-11 a.m. on March 9 at the Common Grounds Coffee Company at 116 Main Street. "Breakfast is available and you can visit with our legislators," Madison said.
