Fort Scott Community College men's head coach Michael Cook might just have to stick with this plan of starting sophomore Austin Danner rather than bringing him off the bench as a super sub, if only for the possibility that it could be good luck.

Danner scored 28 points and made 10 of 15 shots from the field. But his 4-point play with 28 seconds to go in regulation gave the Greyhounds the opportunity to go to overtime and two more baskets in the second extra period brought Fort Scott back from a 5-point deficit as it went on to defeat Independence, 96-91, in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.

"This will prepare us for Region (VI) play," Cook told KSEK-FM's Matt Newbery. "That's what I believe. That's what I know will happen. We'll keep fighting. We'll get it done."

Fort Scott improved to 5-4 in the conference and 10-10 overall. That equals the number of conference victories for the Greyhounds in the past three seasons combined and is only one overall win fewer than in the same time frame.

Danner's game-tying play in regulation came on an inbound play from the right side as he took the pass from James Fleming and drew the foul from Jevron Hooks.

Indy's Peyton Botts missed a 3-point shot from the left wing as time expired, sending the game into OT.

TraVaughn White, who led the Pirates (4-5, 10-11) with 29 points, made the first of two free throws with 4.6 seconds left to tie the score at 81-81. He missed the second shot and Prince Samuels got the rebound for Fort Scott to allow the second extra session to happen.

Indy scored the first 5 points of the second overtime as Hooks hit a 3-point shot from up top and White made two free throws. Danner hit a 3-pointer from the left side with 3:48 to go, then drove the right side of the lane for a layup to tie it with 2:32 to go.

Fleming put the 'Hounds ahead as he drove in with 1:21 left. Daylin Billingsley tipped in a teammate's miss to tie it 88-88 with 1:04 left.

Fleming made 2 free throws with 38 seconds left. Hooks made the first of two with 31 ticks left but missed the second. Ray Ray Chase got the rebound, drew a foul and hit both free throws to make it 92-89 with 28 seconds left.

Hooks drove in for a layup but had his shot blocked by Tyler Adams. Fleming drew a foul on the rebound with 21 seconds left and made both charity shots.

White made two free throws with 16 seconds left to bring Indy within 94-91. Fleming got trapped in the corner of the backcourt on the Pirate's sideline on the inbound pass when he drew a double-team but was alert enough to call time out.

When the ball came in again, Indy fouled Danner who made both free throws with 10.2 seconds to go.

Fleming added 18 points for the Greyhounds while Samuels chipped in with 18 off the bench and Chase finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Point guard Kevin House dished 11 assists and had 7 rebounds while Samuels had 9 boards and Fleming had 7 himself.

Hooks finished with 20 points for Indy while James Pegues chipped in with 15 and Billingsley had 14.

Fort Scott shot 52 percent from the floor, making 31 of 60 total field-goal attempts and 10 of 19 three-pointers. Indy settled for 40 percent on 31 of 78. The Pirates went only 3 for 13 in the overtime periods and 8 of 31 from 3-point range.
