KCK wins District tourney

COFFEYVILLE -- No. 11 Kansas City Kansas swept Fort Scott Community College in the first round of the Region VI Division II District N Volleyball Tournament here Saturday, bringing an end to the Greyhounds' season on its way to qualifying for the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

The scores were 25-17, 25-15, 25-21. Fort Scott finishes its season at 23-12.

Jacy Ermel had 12 kills in the match for the Greyhounds while Ashley Bell added 10. Taylyn Schwartz handed out 29 assists. Kate Smith had 9 digs.

The other first-round match saw host Coffeyville sweep Neosho County, 25-13, 25-19, 25-21. KCK swept Coffeyville in the final, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22.

Defending national champion Cowley continued its undefeated run by winning the District M Tournament at Arkansas City. The Tigers (35-0) swept Hesston in the first round, 25-21, 25-13, 25-18. No. 12 Johnson County beat No. 15 Butler in five in the other semifinal, 25-20, 18-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-8).

Cowley won the final over Johnson County, 25-22, 25-19, 25-15, to win the other National Tournament bid from Region VI.

The Division II National Tournament will be held Nov. 16-18 at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio.

Kansas' representative to the Division I National Tournament will be Hutchinson (27-8), which won the Region VI final over Barton in five sets Saturday at Wichita.
