ONLINE FIRST: Fort Scott soccer will be at McPherson Tuesday
Fort Scott High School will be going west for the Class 4-3-2-1A Quarterfinal round Tuesday.
There was some thought at first that the Tigers (13-5) would be going north for the quarterfinals. A review of KSHSAA documents Friday night found that there was different wording on different sheets explaining the process.
Wording on one sheet made it sound as though the team located farther east would be going to the Northeast quarterfinals and the one farther west would be going to the South Central quarterfinals. Another document showed that the wording was actually east or north and west or south. In this case, the KSHSAA went with the north-south option and Fort Scott, as the school located farther south, was sent west.
Don't worry if you're confused. Those who read the wrong document were in the same boat as you are.
Fort Scott will be seeded third in the South Central Quarterfinals and will be going to McPherson Tuesday. The Tigers advanced to the quarters with a 4-1 victory over Coffeyville in the Southeast Regional II Championship Match at Ellis Park Thursday afternoon. McPherson (16-2) was a 3-0 winner over Elbing Berean Academy Thursday in the South Central Regional II final.
The Tigers were able to avoid No. 1 seed Topeka Hayden (17-1), which blasted Winfield, 8-0, in Friday afternoon's South Central Regional I final in Topeka. That's because Wichita Trinity, seeded ninth in the South Central Region, upset No. 3 Rose Hill in Friday's South Central Regional III final. That match was tied 0-0 after regulation and four overtime periods. It went to penalty kicks and needed seven rounds of those before John Long made the one that won the match for Trinity (7-10-1), which will go to Hayden Tuesday.
Baldwin (16-2), the South Central Regional I champion by virtue of a 1-0 win over Spring Hill Thursday, will be the top seed in the Northeast Quarterfinals. The Bulldogs will face Kansas City Christian (8-6-4), which came out of Northeast Regional I with a 3-0 upset over top-seeded Olathe Heritage Christian on Thursday.
The other Northeast Quarterfinal has DeSoto traveling to Tonganoxie. DeSoto (12-5-1) won the Northeast Regional III title game Thursday night over Kansas City-Piper, 4-1. Tonganoxie (14-3-1) got by Basehor-Linwood in the Northeast Regional II final Friday night, 1-0.
Quarterfinal winners advance to the Class 4-3-2-1A State Tournament Nov. 2-3 at Kansas City-Piper.
NOTE: Some of the quarterfinal matchups may be played Wednesday if the host team's soccer venue is also the football field and that school is also hosting a Bi-District Playoff Game.
