Tiger season ends at 4A Sub-State
PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball season came to an end Saturday with a loss to second-seeded Girard at the Pittsburg Class 4A Sub-State Tournament.
Girard took the match, 25-22, 25-18. Fort Scott's season ended with a 10-24 record.
"We didn't finish the way we wanted to," Fort Scott head coach Carol Bingesser said. "We just couldn't get a run going. It seemed like we would get one and our and just couldn't make a run on them."
Ericah Shoemaker led the Tigers with 7 kills. Maddi Allen handed out 9 assists and Paige Denton had 13 digs.
Girard went on to lose to Pittsburg in the semifinals. In turn, the Purple Dragons fell to top-seeded Frontenac in the final, 18-25, 25-22, 25-23.
The Southeast Kansas League will be represented at State as top-seeded Chanute (34-1) won the El Dorado Sub-State. The Blue Comets defeated Coffeyville in the first round, El Dorado in the semifinals and Towanda-Circle in the final, all in two sets.
Chanute will be the No. 1 seed at the Class 4A State Tournament in Salina this weekend while Frontenac (35-4) will be third. They have been assigned to different pools and so can't face each other before Saturday's semifinals.
The other 4A State qualifiers are No. 2 seed McPherson (38-4), No. 4 Rose Hill (31-8), No. 5 Louisburg (30-11), No. 6 Topeka Hayden (18-13), No. 7 Buhler (22-17) and No. 8 Basehor-Linwood (20-19). McPherson was last year's State runner-up. Rose Hill is the only other returning qualifier. Defending 4A champion Lenexa St. James is competing in the Class 5A State Tournament this year.
