Starlight F.C.E meeting held
The May meeting of the Starlite F.C.E. was held on May 17 at the Yeager Building on the Bourbon County Fairgrounds. The meeting was attended by 11 members and guests. The meeting was called to order by President Doris Ericson, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and club collect. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were read and approved as read.
Correspondence for this month were "thank yous" from Doris Ericson and the Median Plane of Mercy Fund for the memorials in honor of Charlotte Graham, Doris's mother.
Betty and Dale Johnson, Joyce Gobl and Doris Ericson attended the Aging with Attitude Expo in Chanute. There were 12 workshops to choose from and each member could attend four on the topics presented. Betty, Joyce and Doris each gave a report on the workshops they attended.
Ann Ludlum, Southwind extension agent, Marge Stringer, Betty Johnson and Doris Ericson also attended the Area Recognition Day in Pittsburg. Starlite F.C.E. received a Community Service Award for providing cookies to the volunteers of the Neighborhood Blitz, for the visitors at the Chamber of Commerce and the Red Cross Blood Drive.
Under old business, the Bourbon County Fair was discussed. Members will sign up for their regular duties at the fair at the next meeting. Starlite F.C.E. will be taking care of the baked items and the preserved foods as usual. Starlite will also sponsor two "garden parties" with Martha Scott as speaker.
She will talk about edible plants and flowers. Members are bringing cupcakes with white frosting to each program for Martha to demonstrate and decorate.
Kelly Collins, chief park ranger at the Fort Scott Historical Site, presented an interesting program. She brought carpet bags, also bags for salt and flour. She expressed a need for volunteers to sew the carpet bags and the commodity bags. All supplies, fabrics and such are furnished by the Fort.
The Fort has over 300 volunteers, some being high school students from Nevada. These students present a program in the spring dressed in period costumes and use the carpet bags to hide their modern belongings, such as cell phones and bottled water.
Individuals can sign up as volunteers and also clubs. Kelly recognized Joyce Gobl as a volunteer of more than 20 years and over 1,000 hours.
Nancy Patterson from the Genealogy Society also made a plea for volunteers. People are needed to check the spelling of marriage records. There is a list of names to be checked against the records that are in the courthouse.
The June meeting will be held at the Yeager Building on June 21 at 1:30.
