Uniontown softball takes two from Hume
UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Uniontown's softball team took both games of a doubleheader from Hume at George Warren Field Thursday, shutting out the Hornets in the opener while the second game was called in the fourth inning due to a scheduling conflict at Hume.
The Eagles (12-2) won the opener 6-0 as Taylor Wade (6-1) held the Hornets to 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. Uniontown had 7 hits with Jamie Dawson collecting two.
The Eagles won the second game 8-6. It was stopped after 3 1/2 innings because the Hornets had to return to Hume for another school activity.
Hume scored 3 runs in the top of the first and third innings while the Eagles scored 4 runs in the bottom half of the same innings. Mandy Ridge (6-1) allowed one earned run on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5. Wade, Ridge, Lakyn Coyan and Tayler Shook each had one of Uniontown's 4 hits.
"We played just well enough to win both games," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said. "Our pitchers did a good job again today. Their pitchers were caused problems for us in both games. We didn't hit the ball very well today. Part of the problem could have been the strong wind from the south that both teams were hitting into today. Our defense saved the day for us."
The Eagles will travel to Neodesha for non-league games Monday afternoon. Play begins at 4:30 p.m.
