Tickets for Dallas Brass concert go on sale Monday
Tickets for the April 17 performance of "Dallas Brass" go on sale Monday, March 12.
The internationally acclaimed ensemble will perform at 7 p.m., April 17, at the Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center on the Fort Scott Community College campus.
While in town, the Dallas Brass will present a workshop for FSCC and Fort Scott middle and high school students during the day. That evening, selected band members will join the Dallas Brass on stage for part of the concert.
Founded in 1983 by Michael Levine, the Dallas Brass has become one of America's foremost musical ensembles, a news release said. Their concert, "American Musical Journey," incorporates a full complement of brass and percussion for a musical travelogue through American history. From the time of George Washington to the present day, music from the masters will be selected -- Copland, Bernstein, Gershwin, Berlin, John Williams, Sousa. Styles featured are Dixieland, swing, folk, patriotic and pop, the release said.
"A Dallas Brass concert is intended for the entire family," Levine said. "Our goal is to entertain and enrich by playing great music."
The ensemble includes Michael Levine (director, trombone), D.J. Barraclough (trumpet), Chad Willis (trumpet), Juan Berrios (French horn, alto horn), Paul Carlson (tuba) and Sergio Carreno (drums/percussion.)
In addition to their solo engagements, the Dallas Brass appears with symphony orchestras nationwide. Symphonic credits include the Cincinnati Pops conducted by Erich Kunzel, New York Pops conducted by Skitch Henderson and the Philly Pops conducted by Peter Nero.
The Dallas Brass has performed at Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and has toured in Europe and the Far East.
They have also shared the stage with the late Bob Hope, performed for presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush and have appeared on the CBS "Early Show." The group has released six recordings: Debut, Dallas Brass II, A Merry Christmas with Brass, Windborne, Nutcracker and American Musical Journey.
In an effort to encourage youngsters, the ensemble has published two books of original small ensemble music for middle school and high students on up called Brass Groove and they frequently conduct clinics at schools for band students. Inviting students to join them in concert for a selection has become a Dallas Brass trademark.
"This will be an outstanding concert for the community," FSCC Fine Arts Coordinator Jill Warford said. "Their concert will be all-American music with popular songs that everyone will recognize, plus an added bonus is that our own music students here at the college and in the Fort Scott school system will get to participate."
Tickets are $10 general admission and $15 for reserved seating. They go on sale starting Monday, March 12, and will be available at the Gordon Parks Museum on the FSCC campus and Country Cupboard Gifts and Collectibles, 12 N. Main, in downtown Fort Scott.
