FSHS girls improve to 2-0 in league
COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott High's girls are 2-0 in Southeast Kansas League play after beating Coffeyville, 48-29, here Tuesday night.
A 16-1 run in the first quarter in which five player scored gave the Tigers (2-0 SEK, 5-9 overall) control. They led 16-5 after one period and pushed it to 23-9 by the 3-minute mark of the second.
Brianne Lawrence scored 6 points of a 9-2 run that capped the first half and saw Fort Scott go into the locker room up 32-16.
The Tiger offense cooled off in the third period, scoring just 4 points. But the Golden Tornado (0-2, 3-11) were still unable to get their offense going and trailed by 14 points, 36-22 going into the final stanza.
Lawrence scored 21 points -- 9 of those in the second quarter -- to lead the Tigers. Abby Herkelman led Coffeyville with 11. They were the game's only double-figure scorers.
Fort Scott made 18 of 46 field-goal attempts, 39 percent, and 11 of 17 free-throw tries. Coffeyville shot just 24 percent from the floor on 12 of 50 and succeeded on only 4 of 21 free-throw attempts -- 1 of 8 in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers outrebounded Coffeyville, 35-33, and forced 28 turnovers, picking up 17 steals.
Fort Scott will host Chanute in SEK play Friday night as the Tigers return home for the first time since January 13. The Blue Comets (0-2, 5-9) fell at home in overtime to Iola Tuesday night, 42-37.
