Fort Scott was so near without natural gas today that many people were unable to use it for fuel at all and had to improvise other means of cooking their meals. Not since we have been on the natural gas line has the pressure been as low as it was today. Coincident with the shortage of gas, the coal dealers hiked the price of coal $1 per ton. They agree that the price was raised that much at their mines today and that it cannot be sold at a cent less.
Morris Liepman, one of the pioneer businessmen of Fort Scott and one who did much for the success of this city, died this morning at his home at the corner of Second and Crawford streets. He was one of the original stockholders in the Goodlander Hotel. He was ever prominent among the old soldiers of this city. He served two terms as commander of the William H. Lytle Post No. 32, G AR. One of his greatest pleasures was the connection with the building of the monument erected on the courthouse square dedicated to the old soldiers.

Shirley Palmer, a second grade teacher at Winfield Scott Elementary School, was appointed by Gov. Mike Hayden to the Kansas Board of Regents. Local administrators were jubilant about the announcement. "I think this is a great honor for Shirley," said a jubilant Fred Campbell Jr., superintendent of the U-234 School District. "She is a very deserving regent and I think that her appointment will be a great advantage to the district and to the teaching profession."
