Red Devils contain Eagles, 41-28

UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Even quarters were odd for Uniontown's offense Friday night in a 41-28 loss to Erie in a non-league contest.

While the Eagles performed well offensively in the first and third periods, Uniontown scored a total of 2 points combined in the even periods.

"That second quarter just killed us," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said of a period in which the Eagles (5-2) were unable to score. "We couldn't get anything going offensively. It would not fall. Defensively, we played well. I was really happy with that."

Uniontown held an early 5-4 lead with all those points scored by 5-11 sophomore DaNisha Robinson, who made her first start of the season.

Erie (4-4) led 13-9 by the end of the quarter and outscored Uniontown 8-0 in the second. Robinson broke the Eagles' scoring drought -- which lasted 9 minutes and 50 seconds -- with a layup early in the third. That was the beginning of a 9-2 run which brought the Eagles within 23-18 with 4:27 remaining.

The Red Devils threatened to pull away again. But Hope Jurgensen scored 4 points in the final 25 seconds to get the Eagles within 33-26 going into the fourth quarter.

But Uniontown's offense deserted them again in the final stanza. Hayden Rathbun scored only Eagle basket of the period with 3:39 remaining in the contest.

"It really didn't feel like we were completely out of it until about three minutes left in the game," Holt said.

"I have no complaints about the defense; it was on tonight. (Erie's) defense was pretty good, too. Give them some credit there."

The Devils held the Eagles to 28-percent field-goal shooting on 13 of 47. Uniontown was 0 for 11 in the second period and 1 for 12 in the fourth. Erie shot 35 percent on 15 of 43.

Robinson and Rathbun tied for Uniontown's scoring lead with 9 points each. Bret McGuire paced Erie with 18 points. She scored 10 in the first half.

Erie outrebounded Uniontown 38-28. Mandie Ridge had 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists for the Eagles. Rathbun and Jurgensen each picked up 3 steals.

Uniontown travels to Oswego Tuesday night for a Three Rivers League contest. The Indians, idle Friday night, will take a 7-0 record into the game.
