100 YEARS AGO

(1911)

The following is the report of the Union Bend School District 7 for the month ending Oct. 13, 1911: Total number of pupils enrolled 18 -- boys 8 and girls 18. Those receiving certificates of perfect attendance were Lloyd, Juanita and Fern Biles, Beatrice Haberthier, Ethel and Millie Perkins. Patrons are requested and friends invited to visit us and inspect the work being done. -- Cornelia Pellett, teacher.

W.C. Gunn received a letter from Gov. W.R. Stubbs notifying him of his appointment as a delegate to the Trans-Mississippi Commercial Congress to be held Nov. 14-17 in Kansas City. The appointment of Mr. Gunn as a delegate is not only an honor to him, but to Fort Scott as well.

75 YEARS AGO

DEVON -- Leaders, officers and members of the Devon 4-H Club thank the following for their support during the past year: Devon Lumber Company, Masonic Lodge, DeJacimo store, Devon school, Pleasant Valley school, Centerville school, W.W. Hall filling station, Shaw filling station, Devon Methodist Ladies Aid, Berlin Ladies Aid, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Hall, and others.

The new Dodge heads the parade with its breathtaking beauty and enviable record for dependability and money-saving in gas, oil and upkeep. The many improvements of the 1937 Dodge cannot be justly explained, but from bumper to bumper -- every unit of the new big, money-saving automobile achieves a new high in perfection. You can see the new 1937 Dodge Chillion green four-door sedan now on display at Richardson Motor Company.

To stimulate sales, Conine-Larimer offers the following specials: walnut or steel bed, $4.95; four-poster wood bed, $12; Jenny Lind bed, $9.95; cotton mattress, $6.50; felt mattress, $8.50.

The annual Tag Day for the children's Goodlander Home was held Saturday. Some 200 women, under the direction of Mrs. W.S. McDonald, canvassed the city's residential and business districts. Last night's figures showed $704 turned in by the workers. The committee will issue a complete report tomorrow.

(1961)

The Kiwanis Club marked its 40th anniversary with dinner at the Downtowner Hotel. In charge of decorations were Mrs. C.M. Cooper, Mrs. Charles Warren and Mrs. Ernest Howell. On the anniversary committee were Ernest Howell, Les Hinkley, Ralph Mitchell, Tom Moreland, Marvin Sudsberry, Alvin M . Ruddick, James Ross and Louis Sciortino.

Cato community members had a wiener roast at the school house. Mrs. Dave Tucker had charge of the program presented by Mrs. Tucker, Raymond Tucker, Mrs. Rex Noel, Otto Marsh and Frank Schoonover.

A program about the United States flag was a highlight of the Progressive Mothers Club meeting at the home of Mrs. Roy Cundiff, who was assisted by Mrs. Oscar Maberry. The program was presented by Mrs. Varrell Forgey and Mrs. Sam Houf.

ARCADIA -- Mr. and Mrs. Jake Myers picked several boxes of strawberries Oct. 3 at their home near Arcadia. They report some of their tomatoes measure 19 inches in circumference. Mr. Myers, who celebrated his 80th birthday Oct. 16, enjoys gardening and caring for his flowers.

The main building of Duntons in Arcadia is sporting a new front window.
