MoDOT aims to minimize delays

Saturday, July 2, 2011

This Fourth of July, the Missouri Department of Transportation will suspend all routine construction and maintenance for the long weekend to open the roads as much as possible to holiday travelers and improve safety.

"We recognize it is a busy weekend for travelers, and a busy time of year for construction," said Beth Wright, MoDOT's state maintenance engineer. "This year flooding is added into the mix of things that could increase traveler frustrations, but we are doing our best to help you arrive without incident."

MoDOT will limit the amount of work performed over the holiday from noon on Friday, July 1, until 6 a.m., Tuesday, July 5, but drivers may still encounter some construction and lane closures.

Motorists can find an online construction map at www.modot.org to identify where work zones are located and when improvements will take place. The Web site also offers a dedicated flood page which provides up-to-date closures and detours.

Safety is also a factor on heavy travel weekends. Last year 13 people were killed on Missouri roads over the Independence Day holiday. MoDOT offers some tips for staying safe this weekend:

* Buckle up -- every trip, every time -- safety belts save lives.

* Don't drink and drive -- impairment of any kind is dangerous. Designate a sober driver.

* Don't speed -- note the posted limits and adjust for weather and traffic conditions.

* Pay attention and stay alert -- dedicate your full attention to the roadway.

* Obey traffic rules and signs -- they are there to help you.

* Plan your trip -- determine your route before you leave.

* Get plenty of rest before your trip.

* Be patient and courteous.

* ARRIVE ALIVE.
