In these dry conditions, take care with fireworks
With the lack of moisture in recent days and not much expected in the future, Fort Scott Fire Chief Paul Ballou is urging area residents to be careful when lighting fireworks this holiday weekend.
Ballou said a burn ban is not currently in effect, however, recent dry weather has brought the area near the threshold of one. Although there was some moisture last week, the area is currently in a dry spell that is likely to last for several more days.
To prevent grass fires, Ballou said to light fireworks on a piece of wood such as plywood or a 2x4. He said the wood is not likely to ignite from a firework spark.
The Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office offers the following tips for the safe use of fireworks:
* Always purchase high-quality fireworks from reliable and legitimate sources.
* Always read and follow label directions.
* Have an adult supervise all fireworks activities.
* Always ignite fireworks outdoors.
* Have water nearby.
* Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks.
* Light only one firework at a time.
* Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks.
* Never give fireworks to small children.
* Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
* Dispose of fireworks properly.
* Never throw fireworks at another person.
* Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
* Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
In addition, bottle rockets and M-80s are dangerous and illegal in the state of Kansas. The use or sale of these banned fireworks is considered a crime under Kansas law.
