Farmers' Market offers many treats for upcoming holiday
As we all get ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, for
many of us we first think of our family meal -- a great
cookout for most of us. Your menu may look something
like this: Extra lean beef burgers topped with sweet grilled
onions and ripe home-grown tomato slices; corn on the cob; vinegar cucumber and onion salad, slices of grilled
veggies or vegetable kabobs of yellow summer squash,
zucchini, onions, bell peppers, new potatoes -- baked
or small-sized in a foil pack; homemade breads, cookies or
pies; grilled peaches, fresh blackberries to top or flavor
homemade ice cream.
If this sounds like a menu you'll have on the 4th of July,
all these items can be found fresh at Saturday morning's
Farmers' Market, except the homemade ice cream. Vendors
are working hard to get quality product to the market
despite the heat.
The summer produce is bursting out giving us early squashes, bell peppers, cucumbers, green beans, corn
and even some tomatoes.Cabbage, green onions, beets,
bulk sweet onions and potatoes are available, along with
fresh herbs to season all dishes.
Come out to Saturday's market. Take advantage of
your freedom to shop an open-air market. Talk to vendors
about how they like to use the products they sell.
Know your farmer, know your food.
Next Tuesday is the first Tuesday of the month. Don't
forget the market drawing at 5 p.m. The gift certificate will be to Life + Style. All of us at the market
wish everyone a hearty, fun safe Fourth of July celebration.
See you at the market.
