Carl Sonny Leyland, of California, plays a ragtime tune for Fort Scott Middle School students Friday afternoon at the school. Leyland presented a piano workshop as part of the ongoing school programming provided by the Bourbon County Arts Council. A native of England, Leyland began playing boogie-woogie as a teenager. He came to America in 1988 and has since expanded his repertoire to include ragtime and early jazz. He has traveled and performed with blues greats Sam Myers, Ruth Brown, Billy Lee Riley, and Carl Mann. Partial funding for the program was provided by the Kansas Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.(Jason E. Silvers/Tribune)
