Commission to learn more about county workings

Thursday, March 31, 2011

Bourbon County Commissioners will have a chance to learn more about the workings of the county next week as they sit down with all county employees.

Commissioners will meet with staff members at the county barn from 7-8 a.m. Tuesday and are tentatively scheduled to talk with courthouse employees from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday.

The newest commissioner, Allen Warren, came up with the idea and said the remaining commissioners were open to it. Warren took office in January as district 1 commissioner and has been learning how the county works.

He said he has spent some time on different road and bridge projects and hopes he will be able to visit each department to learn more about the different operations.

"Since I'm a new commissioner, I just want to meet with all employees and get to know them better," Warren said. "I think it is very necessary for me to understand what is going on in each department so I can make the right decisions."

Warren said he hopes that in time commissioners and employees can develop an open relationship. He added that another of his goals is to make the meetings quarterly.

According to Bourbon County Clerk Joanne Long, commissioners Harold Coleman and J.W. "Jingles" Endicott met with employees at the county barn when they took office two years ago, however, there has never been a meeting with courthouse employees.

Warren said he had a conflict arise with the Thursday meeting and the commission will discuss another date during Friday's meeting. Long said that if the meetings occur Thursday, doors will be open to allow people to enter the courthouse and access the Bourbon County District Court, but county offices would not be available until 9:30 a.m.

Although a quorum will be present, no action will be taken by the commission.
