Opening Chorus: This is not the Elks Minstrels, but the opening announcement of Crane & Son Jewelers. We bought out a jewelry store, "lock, stock and barrel," at 50 cents on the dollar. It will pay for you to wait a few days, as we prepare for the opening. Everything will be nicely arranged by the 1st. As a get acquainted offer, we will clean, repair, adjust and regulate your clock for 50 cents. -- Crane & Son Jewelers, In Crane's Optical Parlor, 8 N. Main St., Fort Scott

Beginning with last night, all men of Company G were given new equipment. The new khaki uniforms have arrived and are being fitted. New hats have been received, also.

Olive drab blankets are being distributed to non-commissioned officers and to the older enlisted men. By tomorrow night, when the company will drill, it will show up better than it ever has for several years.

R.C. Campbell, of the Fort Scott Laundry, arrived home this morning from Lawrence where he attended the meeting of the state association of laundrymen. He was the only laundryman from this part of the state to attend.

Perry Rhine had a good day at the Country Club links yesterday.

He shot a 33 over the 9-hole course in the morning and hit the same score again in the afternoon.

A 66 is a good score for the local links. Charles McKey shot a 65 last summer.

There used to be an unwritten rule of letter etiquette to the effect that it was contrary to good taste to use the personal pronoun "I" as the first word of a letter. This rule, however, has not been observed for many years.

Farmers and Farming (Edited by H.V. Cowan, the Tribune Farm Reporter)

It was a hard proposition a few days ago to decline two invitations to stay for dinner. At one of the places they had cornbread and strawberries. But our determination to reach Mapleton to eat dinner with our daughter and family impelled us to reject the kind of hospitality of these fine farm folks.

It seems it had become quite the custom of some magazine peddlers to take chickens for subscriptions and when they called at a farm where there was no one at home, they just took the chickens anyway.

We have not learned whether they sent a subscription to the magazine where they got chickens without the consent of the owners or not.
