Longview beats FSCC, 5-3
Longview (Mo.) took advantage of several Fort Scott Community College miscues and turned two double plays in the late innings to take a 5-3 win over the Greyhounds at Lions Field here Thursday afternoon.
The teams were tied 2-2 after one inning but the Lakers scored single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings while taking advantage of Greyhound errors.
Longview also helped itself by turning double players in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings. The sixth-inning double play hurt the Greyhounds (8-3) perhaps more as the next two batters reached base.
Gavin Stark hit a solo home run with one out in the eighth for the 'Hounds. But a strikeout and a line out to first base allowed the Lakers to escape without any further damage.
Fort Scott got its first two batters on in the bottom of the ninth as Ryan Sorell drew a leadoff walk and Cole Fergus reached when the infield had trouble with his ground ball.
Corey Stringer bunted the runners over. But Longview got a strikeout for the second out. Dylan Banach was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. However, a groundout to the pitcher ended the game.
Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play opens this weekend when Highland comes to Lions Field for a pair of doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, Play each day, weather permitting, begins at 1 p.m. each day.
