The achievements of five Kansas teams that participated -- and took top honors in the World Championship Ranch Rodeo -- will be recognized at a Jan. 8, 2011 celebration in Cottonwood Falls.

Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Cottonwood Falls Community Building. Cottonwood Falls is about 145 miles west northwest of Fort Scott.

The team from Scribner Ranch and El Dorado Livestock Inc. took home the World Championship Ranch Rodeo trophy from the World Championship Ranch Rodeo, held Nov. 11-14 at the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, Texas. It was WRCA's 15th annual championship.

Reserve world champions were Beachner Brothers Livestock of St. Paul and Broken H Ranch of Bronson. Team members were Calvin Kendall, Cody Kendall, Cliff Hall, Sage Hall, Bruce Beeman and Orban Stevens.

Fourth place overall went to Arndt Ranch & Bailey Ranch from Emporia and Tampa, Kan. In ninth place was KW Cattle Co. and Diamond E Ranch of Fort Scott and Redfield.

And in 11th place overall was Buck Creek/Lonesome Pine Ranch from Chase County.

Celebration organizer Ernie Rodina said five out of the 20 teams qualified for top honors and that three out of five were in the top four is cause for celebration. He said he's not aware of that many teams qualifying in one year. Rodina said he thinks the Kansas cowboys' showing makes a "pretty big statement about the strength" of the state's cowboys.

"We're expecting 300. It's RSVP," said Rodina, who hosts the "Better Horses Radio Show" with Dawn Dawson. He added this is the first celebration of its kind for the cowboys.

"This is the first one we've done. Purina Mills sponsors one of the teams. We root for all the Kansas teams when we're down there. I thought it would be nice to show some tribute to them. We're going to have the event on Saturday, Jan. 8. There's a $10 admission (charge), but all the proceeds will go to the WRCA Crisis Cowboy Fund," Rodina said.

"It's a great camaraderie of cowboys and cowgirls helping each other," he added.

The event also includes a dance, barbecue, recognition, auction with all proceeds going to the crisis fund, and entertainment.

The "Better Horses" radio show can be heard from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. Saturdays on station KMDO (1600-AM) in Fort Scott.

"I think it's going to be a great time," Rodina said. "I'm really partial to your area. I started in Humboldt and I have a lot of good friends in Bourbon County -- a good bunch of folks."
