Uniontown boys prevail in OT; Eagle girls win in rout

Thursday, December 9, 2010

HUMBOLDT -- Uniontown's boys prevented any Humboldt scoring in overtime while the girls nearly prevented any scoring at all as the Eagles swept the host school on the first night of a round-robin tournament here Tuesday.

Uniontown's boys (2-0) outscored Humboldt 20-8 in the fourth quarter to force overtime tied at 42-42, then posted a 7-0 advantage in the extra period to prevail, 49-42.

Brandon Esslinger scored 20 points to lead the Eagles.

Uniontown led 14-8 after one period. But the Cubs (0-2) held the Eagles to 4 points in each of the next two periods to go up 19-18 at the half and 34-22 after three.

Derrik McCall led Humboldt with 13 points. Ryan Kuns and Ryan Ramsey added 8 points each to Uniontown's total.

Erie defeated Crest in the other boys' contest, 48-24, as Kyle Hammond led the Lancers (2-1) with 16 points.

Uniontown girls 58, Humboldt 7.

That was not a misprint. Humboldt scored just 4 points in the first quarter and scored less in each successive period. The Cubs (0-2) had 2 points in the second, just 1 in the third and were shut out in the fourth.

Uniontown (2-0) led 18-4 after one, 34-6 at halftime, and 50-7 after three.

"We were able to get a lot of points off of our press," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "We got out of it fairly quickly, but our press really caused them problems. We were able to get a lot of girls in the game, and a lot of girls contributed."

Jacy Ermel scored 23 points, hauled down 9 rebounds and picked up 6 steals to lead the Eagles. She also blocked 2 shots. Tayler Shook added 7 points and Hayden Rathbun and Jennifer Ulrey each had 6.

Taylyn Wells led Humboldt with 3 points. Only two other Cubs scored.

Erie defeated Crest in the other game. Katie Brungardt led the Red Devils with 14 points.

Humboldt won a JV contest over the Eagles, 41-38. Emily Shinn scored 9 points for the Eagles and Amelia Brown had 8.

Tonight's tourney schedule has Uniontown's teams taking on Erie and Crest squads taking on Humboldt. Play concludes Friday with Uniontown versus Crest and Erie facing Humboldt.
