Having never seen the musical "Cinderella" live, Fort Scott Community College theater instructor Jannell Robinson decided to stage it here.
The college's fall production is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 2-3 and 2 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center on the FSCC campus, 2108 S. Horton. This is the Rodgers and Hammerstein version of the play.
"Cinderella" tells the story of a young girl whose widowed father marries a woman with two daughters of her own. Cinderella is made to scrub floors and cater to the whims of her stepmother and stepsisters. They are all invited to the kingdom's fancy dress ball, but Cinderella is told to stay home and do chores. The king is hoping his son, the prince, will find a suitable bride at the ball, according to references.
Mice in the house and a fairy godmother fix Cinderella up with a dress and carriage ride, but the spell is broken at midnight. Cinderella leaves behind a glass slipper and the prince goes around the kingdom trying to find the shoe's owner. The prince finds it fits Cinderella and the two live happily ever after.
Robinson said she doesn't think the production has been put on at FSCC before. "This has been a musical that even as a child, I loved it. I love the music. I've never seen it live or directed it live. I've always liked it," Robinson said.
There are 18 people in the production, including seven people from the community, she said. Unlike traditional plays, Robinson said some of the cast will be mingling with the audience at key points, such as when the prince is searching for the owner of the glass slipper.
Tickets can be purchased through the FSCC switchboard and are priced at $12 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and students, and $5 for FSCC students and employees.
