Benefit dinner to help bring Santa to Arcadia

Good news concerning Galen Dunn who is now in the hospital in Minnesota having tests. If he is well enough, they may release him to his home for the holiday then return for more tests as needed. He and his wife, Jodie Dunn, are on leave in the U.S. from the church and school they established in the Philippine Islands.

Out of town guests in Arcadia Christian Church on Nov. 21 with Walter Foulk were his wife Mary Foulk, and daughter, Lora Foulk from St. Louis, Mo. Walter just recently got back, in his Arcadia home after Hip surgery and rehab treatments in Fort Scott. His family came last week to assist Walter in his home and returned to St. Louis on Sunday.

Susie Stelle announced the Cato Historical Preservation Association meeting has been changed from the fourth Tueday to Nov. 30, 6:30 in the Arcadia Community Center. Those interested are welcome to attend.

Friends were sorry to learn of the death of Joe Youvan, 83, on Tuesday, Nov. 16. He was born and lived in Franklin, Kan., most of his life. His wife, Betty, preceded him in death, July 26, 2010. He is survived by a daughter, Debbie Schaub and husband John Schaub, Arcadia; three grandchildren, Jeane Kotzman and husband Desi; Joe Schaub and wife Kelly; Joane Schaub and four great grandchildren. Also two sisters, Frances Pintar and Agnes Dove. Graveside services were Thursday, Nov. 8 by Roy Widmar. Condolances to the family.

Guests visiting Mae Watt this past week were Ashley Semple and baby Elizabeth from Redfield, Kan.; and Delton Watt Jr., from Fayette, Mo., who spent Thursday overnight. He was pleased to be one of the many veterans to enjoy a special dinner to honor them on Veteran's Day in Fayette.

Mrs. Claude (Portie) Hughes of McPherson, Kan., attended the funeral of her sister-in-law, Virginia (Ginny) Skaggs on Nov. 20 in Lamar, Mo. The deceased was a sister to the late Claude Hughes. Other family members with her were Kirby Gould, Tim Hughes, Lisa Blodgett and Portie's brother Charles Corporon from Pittsburg, Kan. Ginny was the last of the Hughes family to die.

Pictured in the Nevada Daily Mail were two cousins formerly from Arcadia now living in Nevada, Mo. Billie Sue Guthrie McCullough was presented a certificate for 50 year membership in the DAR Chapter. The other was Vickie Ferraro Turner who has been a member of DAR for 25 years.

Several people in Arcadia received letters from Sisters and Brothers in Christ inviting us to be guests at Open Door Church when our own churches and not having services. I thank the one inviting me. It was very thoughtful of the one who sent it.

The Country Gospel team who performed on Friday night, Nov. 19, in Arcadia Community Center were from the Minden Mines, Mo., area and were well received by the audience of about 30 people. Snacks and drinks were sold during break time and much visiting took place. Gene Stephens took up the offering for the musicians. There were three guitars, chord organ and a lady singer.

The November meeting of JOY Sunday School Class was quite different this month in that Pastor Willa and Charles Cable served as hosts in the Christian Church Parsonage on Arcadia Street. Guests were from the Oskaloosa Baptist Church and Open Door Mission and Christian Church including members of JOY Class. Men assisted Pastor Cable cooking hamburgers and giant hot dogs on the grill on back porch. Guests furnished the complimentary foods including pies and cake.

Welcoming the group was Patty Peterson, President of JOY. The Class needs 300 more BEST CHOICE UPS before the last of December. It is a fundraiser for the class. Everyone is asked to participate in this project. The class helps folks in times of need.

The big business of interest to all that evening was led by Lilly Coonrod concerning the two forthcoming beneft dinners.

On Nov. 28, after Church on Sunday from 11 a.m. -?? there will be a benefit dinner to bring Santa to town in December. The Bridgewaters will be serving chicken and noodles with full menu with help from others. Offerings will be taken. Santa will come to downtown Arcadia, Dec. 11 at 6:30.

On Dec. 12, come after church or from 11 a.m. to ?? to Arcadia Community Center for the holiday turkey dinner and trimmings furnished by many people. This benefit is to help the Kevin Murphy family. He was recently in a motorcycle wreck and broke his neck.

The committee is also asking for food pantry item donations for the needy at Christmas.
