Church family celebrates baby with shower

Jack and Mary Lee Payne recently attended the family reunion of descendants of Collie and Ollie Eggen, parents of Mary Lee, at Western Hills Guest Ranch, Wanewsgoner, Okla. A total of 47 attended, coming from Utah, Texas, Oregon, Washington State, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas. Activities included swimming, boating on Fort Gibson Lake, golfing and bingo. A large room was available for visiting, eating and games. Greg and Sharon Dunn, son of Hardy and Jessie Dunn, provided one night of singing during the reunion. This event is held every two years, with the first one here in Pittsburg and the one before that in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The last weekend in July, Allen and Linda Watt from Wichita visited his mother, Mae Watt, on Saturday.

Thirty-one were in attendance in Arcadia Christian Church the last Sunday in July. Dale McGrew from rural Pittsburg was a newcomer in JOY Sunday School Class and for church and enjoyed the dinner. Many of the guests were friends of the song leader, Stuart and Ashley Semple from Redfield.

Following the monthly church dinner, a baby shower was held in the bungalow. Pink was the main color scheme with baby booties decorating the lacy tablecloth. Stuart won the bottle of jelly beans and nuts when he guessed the closest number to the amount. A chocolate cake and a white cake, both decorated with baby items, were served with delicious punch. The hostesses, Christie Parrish, was in charge of the games including guessing whose baby picture was shown. Willa Cable recorded the gifts and donors. Vera Parrish baked the chocolate cake and served the decorated cakes, while Patty Peterson helped with the display of opened gifts. Three of the young ladies from the Sunday School Class helping were Stephanie Lickliter, Cheyenne Melon and Josie Bryant. The mother-to-be, Ashley, is co-teacher with Patty Peterson of the youth class. She assisted the father-to-be in opening the gifts. The gift from the church family is a baby bed.

Richard Waring, son of Ruth and Lester Waring, Garland, fell from a roof top and is unable to work his usual job of installing carpet. Out of the KU Medical Center, he is back in his Eudora, Kan., home. His three children are l6, 11 and three-years old. An account has been set up for his family at Citizens Bank, Fort Scott. The family also asks for prayers for recovery.

The successful Vacation Bible School held in Baptist Church in Oskaloosa, Mo., closed with their final program on Saturday evening. Children as pupils and adults as teachers and cooks from Arcadia numbered 35 throughout the week in attendance. Brother Chris Beardon of Liberal, Mo., is the pastor in charge of the outstanding week of Bible Study, crafts and activity.

Haley and Mark Shead, with Katy and Benjamin, have returned to their home in Fort Scott after vacationing in Steamboat Springs, Colo., with Haley's father.

Tammy and Daneta McNeil announce the birth of their daughter, Danielle Rae McNeil on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in Mercy Health Center, Fort Scott. Her siblings are Lindsey, Cody and Kaylee. Maternal grandparents are Mike and Linda Krieger, Arcadia; and great-grandparents are Ella Mae Saker of Fort Scott and Cindy Tustin of Arcadia. Paternal grandparents are Debbie Clarkson and Tom McNeil, Fort Scott; paternal great-grandparent is Loretta Collins, Fort Scott.

Kaye Rutherford, 66, Springfield, Mo., died Thursday, July 30 in the hospital. She is the daughter of Don and Marihta Rutherford. Kaye was an administrator for Bass Pro for 40 years. She graduated from Arcadia High School in l962. Survivors include her mother, rural Arma, and sister Joann Rutherford of Lake Ozark, Mo. The funeral was Monday Aug. 2, 2010, in Bedene Funeral Home, Arma, with Steve Cole officiating. Burial in the Garden of Memories, Pittsburg. Memorials are for Kansas Humane Society.

The newlyweds as of July 17, Maria and Clayton Whitson returned to Garland from their honeymoon trip in Kentucky on Saturday evening, July 31 in time for a late supper. In her parent's home, Vickie and Larry Shead, and with guests, her grandmother, Mary V Shead and Maria's cousin Vanassa Murphy, all enjoyed the opening of their wedding gifts. Sunday morning, the couple left for Wichita to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Whitson. Early in the week they will be in their own new home in Tulsa, Okla.
