Three favorite events of the annual Good Ol' Days celebration will return for another year, according to organizers of the annual festival.

The bed races, the Fort Scott Idol competition, and the wiener dog race are popular events during the Good Ol' Days celebration each year and attract large crowds, organizers said.

"We only had three beds in the race last year but the crowds went wild," local resident Kevin Allen, the coordinator of the bed race, said. "We are hoping this year that we have some more teams entered to race. It's a crazy, fun event to be in and watch."

Interested teams may contact Allen at (620) 224-4720 to enter the races, which are scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Friday, June 4, in downtown Fort Scott.

The Fort Scott Idol contest, now in its fifth year, is scheduled to take place Thursday, June 3, at Memorial Hall, 1 E. Third St. Organizers of this contest are accepting contestant applications until Friday.

"We had excellent entertainment last year and we hope that we have a good representation this year," Millie Lipscomb, the chairwoman of the Fort Scott Idol contest, said. "Fort Scott has some amazingly talented citizens."

The form to enter the contest can be found on the Good Ol' Days website, www.fortscottgoodoldays.com.

The wiener dog race has also been a popular event each year during the Good Ol' Days celebration. The event has grown each year since it began in 2008, and now includes more than 150 dogs. This year's event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 4, in downtown Fort Scott. The event is coordinated by local residents Leah Bowman, Julie Reynolds, Chana Marshall, Phil Hammons, Clara Dunn, Rhonda Dunn, and Hannah Dunn. The event will include eight lanes and several different heats.

"We wanted to organize it a little bit different this year and I think having lanes will help out, though some of the dogs may not realize what they're for," Bowman said.

Registration for the dog races will take place between 7 and 7:30 p.m. at the grassy area on the corner of Wall and Main streets. Only two people per dog will be allowed inside the lanes. Prizes will be awarded for the dogs that place first, second and third overall.

The 29th Annual Good Ol' Days celebration will take place June 3-6. Brochures for the festival are available at Country Cupboard, 12 N. Main St., the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce, 231 E. Wall St., and the Fort Scott National Historic Site near Skubitz Plaza. Brochures are also available at various locations in Fort Scott and can be found on the Good Ol' Days website.
