Arcadians celebrate Mother's Day

Paul and Cherri Walrod and family attended the Arcadia Christian Church on Mother's Day to honor her mother, Willa Cable, who was song leader. Her dad, Charles Cable preached.

Wayne and Christie Parrish, his sister Janet and Mark Van Leeuwen honored their mother, Vera, by attending with her and John Parrish after they had a special family breakfast together.

Larry and Vickie Shead were guests for Sunday School and later joined by Ralph and Cindy Shead and Charles Corporon for church. That afternoon, Matthew and Ashley Shead arrived at the Shead farm for the dinner served by the men folks to honor the mothers present.

Tom Watt was a church guest of his mother, Mae Watt.

Honor was shown for his grandmother, on this special day when Clay Carrington, accompanied Lorene Gibson, to church as usual on Sunday.

Josie Bryant and Cheyenne Mellon presented a skit before sermon time to honor their mothers, Jody and Brandy, who were in the audience.

Upon leaving, every lady was presented with a potted flower, to be planted at home to remember this special day.

Pastor Cable added humor to his sermon on this Sunday by telling funny things his mother taught him as his Sunday School teacher as well as in their home.

Galen and Jodie Dunn will speak of their work in the Philippines when they are guest speakers in Open Door Mission on Aug. 8 in Arcadia. He is a local fellow who grew up in Arcadia and attended school here and in Arma. He and his wife established a church and school in the Philippines and this summer will return there for students graduation in June.

Friday evening, May 7, a group of church friends gathered in the Christian Church bungalow to honor Sam Truesdell, Mulberry and Ryan Brooks, Englevale for their graduation from Arma this month and to wish them both well as they enter the military service.

Cards and gifts were received and thanks given by both men. The Bibles autographed by all guests were presented to each fellow as a gift from Arcadia Christian Church. Ice cream and cakes, both white and chocolate, baked by Vera Parrish, were served with ice tea. Present were two special guests, Sam's mother, Karen Mizer, and Ryan's mother, Carole Black Brooks. Others were Stuart and Ashley Semple, Patty Peterson, Mae Watt, Willa and Charles Cable, Vera and John Parrish, Christie and Wayne Parrish, Mary V. Shead, Phoenix Smith, Clay Carrington and Cheyenne Mellon.

According to the bulletin sent by Fort Scott Presbyterian Village, Mother's Day was celebrated by giving ladies at the Village the royal treatment including hair styling and makeup application. Tenants were allowed pictures taken in a favorite outfit. They were available to give to families for Mother's Day. Plans were made for an enjoyable evening on May 13 as they travel to an old-fashioned diner, Freddy's in Pittsburg.
