Smith sets two meet records at Frontenac; Jayhawk's Miller breaks javelin mark

FRONTENAC, Kan. -- Senior Abbie Smith broke two meet records at the Frontenac Invitational here Thursday.

Smith, who set a school record in the 100-meter hurdles Tuesday at Oswego, won that event here with a record time of 15.91 seconds. She ran a 15.7 at Oswego.

Smith also took the long jump with a meet record of 17 feet, 3 inches.

"Abbie had a great day," Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. "(Former Eagle Trish) Eldridge had held the long jump record at 16' 11" since 2004. Abbie broke her own hurdle record of 17.02, which she set last year."

Jacy Ermel won the shot put for the Eagles with a mark of 32' 9 3/4. She also took second in javelin at 109' 10", just one inch behind Amory Miller of Jayhawk-Linn, and fifth in discus at 71' 1".

Ermel broke the meet's javelin mark with her throw (The old record was 104' 6"), according to Hall, but Miller threw last and claimed the record as her own with her throw.

Also for the girls, Abby Dixon claimed fourth in the discus with a 71' 10" mark and sixth in shot put with 25' 4 1/4". And Jessica Schaaf took sixth in the 1,600-meter run in 6:45.92.

Miller was not the Jayhawk girl with a winning effort here. Chelsea Beckman won discus with a throw of 106' 3" and was the only competitor who went farther than 98 feet. Meriel Long won high jump at 5 feet even. Morgan Eastwood took the 300-meter hurdles in 50.28 with Smith second in 51 flat. And the 4x400-meter relay team won with a time of 4:26.47.

On the boys' side, Jayhawk-Linn had seven winners by three individuals starting with Steven Mann's 43' 4" effort in triple jump, which was the only 40-foot mark. Mann also claimed the long jump at 22' 7 3/4" and was the only one over 20 feet. He also won the 100-meter dash in 11.11

Snyder won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.88, the 300's in 40 seconds flat and the 200 dash in 23.14.

Dylan Thyer won the 400-meter dash for the 'Hawks in 53.19.

Uniontown did not have any event winners but earned four fourths and two sixths. Seth Sympson was fourth in high jump and the 800 meters. Zach Travis was fourth in javelin and Trenton Miller was fourth in discus. Ben Dixon was sixth in the 200 meters and long jump.

Uniontown's next meet is not until April 19 when the Eagles will go to Burlington to take part in a meet hosted by Waverly. Jayhawk-Linn is scheduled to compete at Pleasanton Tuesday.
