William Lewis May, 71, of Fort Scott, Kan., died at 2:10 p.m., Friday, February 26, 2010 in the Medicalodge in Fort Scott.

He was born March 4, 1938 in Webb City, Mo., a son of Elvis Lee and Nellie Marie (Lewis) May.

At an early age, he moved with his family to Parsons, Kan., and attended Garfield Grade School, East Junior High School, Parsons High School and Parsons Junior College, now Labette Community College.

He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science and Biology degree and teaching certificate in1968 and a Master of Science in 1970.

He served in the US Army from Sept. 10, 1961 until Sept. 10, 1965.

He worked as a Biology teacher at Fort Scott High School and later at the Western Insurance Company in Fort Scott.

He was a member of Fort Scott Lodge AF & AM and the Consistory in Fort Scott.

Survivors are brothers James L. May of Altamont, Kan.; Robert "Bob" May and Jerry May both of Wichita; a niece, numerous nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Mary Lou May, on Feb. 22, 1997.

Mr. May's wishes were to have no services. His cremains will be interred in the National Cemetery in Fort Scott.
