Fort Scott boys win freshmen tourney title; girls second

FORT SCOTT -- Fort Scott High School's boys won the championship of their own season-ending tournament while the girls finished in second place as both teams defeated their Friday-night opponents.

Tiger boys beat Chanute 64-60. Iola's boys beat Jayhawk-Linn earlier in the day, creating the three-way tie. Unofficially, Jayhawk-Linn finished second and Chanute third in the four-team round-robin.

Fort Scott's girls defeated Iola 34-25. Chanute won the tournament followed by the Tigers. The Blue Comets defeated Fort Scott on Wednesday night.

Boys

The Tigers beat Iola Monday night, 55-26. Straton Hunziker led Fort Scott with 13 points followed by Austin Sather with 12.

Wednesday night, Jayhawk-Linn beat Fort Scott 57-56 in a battle of coaching brothers. Little brother Trent Stepps, Jayhawk-Linn's coach, got the better of big brother Pechone, Fort Scott's coach. Davis Drake led the Tigers with 13 points followed by Hunziker with 11 and A.J. Cezar with 10.

Friday, the Tigers held off Chanute behind 19 points from Marques Floyd, 14 by Hunziker and 13 from Sather.

Also, in a non-tournament game Thursday night, Floyd scored 14 points and Hunziker had 10 in a 72-38 loss to Coffeyville.

Girls

Monday night, the Tigers defeated Jayhawk-Linn 52-30 as Tiera Floyd scored 24 points and Sidney Maycumber added 13.

Wednesday Chanute took a 50-37 victory over the Tigers. Floyd scored 13 points and Maycumber had 11.

Friday, Iola led 15-14 at the half but the Tigers allowed only 2 points in the first 11 minutes of the second half as they rallied for the victory. Fort Scott led 25-17 after three quarters and were up as much as 32-17 during the fourth. Maycumber led with 9 points while Floyd and Karley Nelson each had 6.

Like the boys, the girls played a non-tournament game on Thursday, beating Coffeyville 49-24. Maycumber had 14 points in that game while Nelson scored 13.
